I own a 2012 Tundra Crewmax with a 5.7. I have 120,000 miles on it. I recently had my oil changed at a place that I have been using for a while. I have had good results with this place, and had no reason to doubt the quality of work. It was at the end of the day on a Friday, and I know they rushed it out of the door. When I got about 10 minutes down the road, I heard a tapping sound in my engine and noticed that the oil gauge was showing the level was a little low. I pulled over as soon as I saw this and had it towed back to the facility. I never got any light or indication that it was low other than hearing a tapping and seeing the oil level gauge low. The O-ring on the filter had been cut during install, therefore the loss of oil. My question is, should I have my engine checked by another Mechanic to make sure that no damage was done? The guy at the shop that performed this work said that there is a shut off of some sort to protect the engine from damage in a scenario like this, but I want to make sure my engine will be OK, as I plan on driving this truck for a long time. Any thoughts, feedback, suggestions would be much appreciated from this first time poster.

If you actually heard the engine tapping I would venture there has been damage done. If what you heard was not actual engine noise you may be ok.

If it were you, would you have it checked out by another Mechanic? I just don't understand why I did not get any warning on the instrument cluster, etc. I would like to think that a check engine light or something would have alerted me.

well their mistake so have them check it for free and if you don't like the outcome, have another shop look at it

It is odd that the trucks low oil pressure didn't alert you to a leak in the oil filter assembly. I say take it to the dealer.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Check engine light is really for sensors(ECM or wiring) not oil pressure...

Most oil pressure sensors are near or on top of the oil pump... If the pressure is low in most cases it doesn't turn on till engine damage has already happen.. I have seen this in Ford and gm engines before..

To answer you question tho.. has damage happened.. depends on how long the engine ran with minimum oil pressure was reached and below minimum for how long before noises start.. noise tells you the oil layer is gone..

How much oil drained out? Metal on metal and expanding internal parts would not be good.

I would totally stay away from the place that changed your oil. Totally inexcusable. Have the dealer check it out. Make oil change place pay for it. If there is any damage..........small claims court.
