dumb question but after installing a snorkel for deep water crossings what do you do with the alternator? Mine sits at the lowest part of the engine and from past experience flooding it with cold water while the engine is running kills it? Is their an aftermarket kit which seals them??

If my leather seated limited had a snorkel I’d cross this river to get to the dunes on the other side too. Just sayin:mudding:

I didn't get the snorkel just so I can rock the look. Indeed, my truck will be one of those that you laugh on the street (stock look plus a snorkel) Mind you, we are in Houston area and when Harvey hit last year, my then pregnant wife and I were almost stuck in an flooded area where only if my vehicle had a snorkel or higher intake location. I decided to get the snorkel to buy my family one extra shot if it ever comes down to that. So laugh all you want.

So you bought a snorkel to save your family? Ok. I have a different idea. Give your family an even better shot than a snorkel and buy a boat. Or even better, move away from a place where floods like that can happen. I know that if I thought my family were in serious danger because of where I lived - we'd be relocating in a heartbeat.

When you get one, I want to see the video. :)

We were in the adjacent city visiting a friend, which is not even in my neighborhood. Mind you, my neighborhood was fine. We were caught by surprise.Yes, boat, we are getting it, but does this mean I should drag it anywhere I go from now on?
Relocating is not as easy as what you think when it comes to job, family, life, and even school district for kids. You prolly don't have kids or family yet. It's not something you pick up and go overnight. And yes, we did relocate after all.
My point is, next time you laugh, maybe consider the possibility that people have their reason do what they do.

Lost my truck and business during Harvey. The flooding wasn't funny at all. If you want the snorkel to better prepare for another flood then good for you man.

Natural disasters can/do occur in every state. Moving won't fix that.

So sorry to hear that brotha. Hope you have recovered by now.
You are absolutely right, natural disaster can happen anywhere and anytime. (We were really caught by surprise that night!) As I was saying, all I am doing is trying to get extra shots for my family, thaz all.

I have 3 kids. One is about to graduate. Relocating isn't easy, I'll give you that - but it is possible - you even said you did it.

Even with the outliers like yourself, I will still chuckle at them, because I know that quite a few of them are on the vehicle simply for looks or to give the impression that they are "hardcore" off-roaders.

First, sorry for your losses. That really sucks.

Natural disasters do occur in every state. But living in strategic places can pretty much eliminate some of them. I live in the mountains and have most of my life. Never had to deal with flooding issues (yes, there can be flooding in the mountains - but never where I have lived), tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. The only natural disaster thing that I have had to deal with really is forest fires.

Just wondering why we need a snorkel? Hear me first.

Reason I ask is that the OEM location is at the top horizontal plane/part of my engine (located at wheel well). If water goes above that, then the enginefloods as well as the interior of the vehicle.

Concerns also include rain/mist/snow coming into a wide open snorkel pointed into the headwind driving down the road.

Totally understanding where you point of view. This is my thought process.
For the engine to be complete "flooded" and shut down, the engine has to suck in water first (correct me if I am mistaken). I didn't get the snorkel to cross river "all day long". I am not even using my truck for any off road purposes. All I want it for is when it comes down to that final stretch and push just so my family can be out of the harm's way, I got that extra shot. If we get to get home safe, even the interior messed up, the electronics dead, engine dead after all, so be it. At least, we got that extra shot.

For snow and all that, if it gets too bad, I know you can turn that thing backward lol

Now what other people want it for, I can't speak for them.

haha you know what I think, you just want me to say it.

I will say this though. Anybody getting a snorkel because they want to "take care of their family" is an idiot. Trade the tundra in and get a better vehicle. Or keep the tundra and get a second better vehicle. Or move. Or rip the entire interior apart and waterproof your ECU and all the other important electrical connections because those will go out first.

There. I puked my opinion. Are you happy Bruce?

“Stock”....and a little after stock. (See pics below)

Granted, looks great on a jacked up FJ.

Negatives: that feeling you get when you measure ten times and cut once...then wonder if maybe you should have measured eleven times. Hahaha

    Positives:

Better airflow. Was able to run the same mountain grade without having to downshift. (Quasi Ram-Air)

The ARB allowed me to keep the pre air filter cyclone cup. That caught most of the dirt, dust, bugs, etc before they even made it to the air filter.

Living in mostly desert climes (at the time) you got relatively cooler air to the engine, and it was great when you were tailgunner in the trails (see the dust comment above)

In the second picture, (lifted, head on view) I’ve been in muddy water just above the windshield wipers. No problems.

Granted, I wouldn’t do this to my Tundra. The lines are all wrong. But, there are some advantages for those who want/need them.

Anyone installed an ARB with bushwacker flairs? Trying to avoid cutting into that to make room....I know the Dobinson is better.

I don't know about Dobinson, but Bushwacker is for sure no. At one point, I thought about only installing 3 and just leave that side off.

In Australia, many of our Toyota trucks had snorkels. They weren't for forging flooded streams. Instead, they were an attempt to keep your intake above the dust clouds created on the dry road beds. Air filters lasted much longer on the trucks with snorkels. Please do not try to "submarine" your Tundra thinking that it's ok now that you have a snorkel.

I also lived through Harvey and this snorkel would not have been any real help in getting you out of a flood. Water that high is going to cause you to stall in the floodwater due to electrical faults...not water in the intake.
