So the shop tells me I have a leaking rack and pinion

What is the consensus on replacement racks? I’m seeing OEM $650-$800, and Detroit Axle New $255, Refurb DA $225

I haven't had to replace the one on my truck - but bought a refurb unit off of ebay for my Camry. It's been in for a few years with zero complaints. Good luck.

    I am checking around

Just gathering knowledge and first hand experience

I know some people only say OEM and you hear horror stories about junk racks

The way I look a most things when it comes time to repair be it trucks, homes, body parts etc. is to consider the overall lowest cost.

In this case of your rack, the labor to remove and replace is the same. The premium is the extra cost for the part. I will always install OEM unless its some smaller repair where if a part goes bad it can be swapped out easily without being out of service for a few days.

Here are two prices for a 2006 from this website. Go there and pick your vehicle type and narrow it down.

An extra $250 is cheap peace of mind.

I just spent $2k worth of parts and repair done on my truck in the last 3 months and there’s More to go.

$800 for an OEM rack plus labor isn’t reasonable right now,and with work and two babies I’m not tearing it apart myself

Yours is the $800 dollar one? Figures. You can still buy the part from this site and have the mechanic do the install.

I’m looking at the OEM rear muffler for the 02’ which is around $550 versus $130 for a Walker. Guys here say good things about the Walker, but I’ve been leery of all after market mufflers I’ve ever had in the past on other vehicles. They don’t seem to last.

The 02’ is still on its original, buts its time is coming. Question is do I pay $420 extra for it? I’ll be doing the install.

Let us know how it goes!

Can someone please chime in, what is the name of the part or crossmember where the steering rack attaches to. Is this part of the frame (welded to the ladder frame) or is it attached to the frame with bolts - that is, can it be replaced?
    Thanks.

It’s called the rear cross member assembly. Check out rock auto, summit racing, jeggs, or your local auto parts store for a rebuilt model

Thank you Hand Model for the images. I'm going to raise the truck on a lift and compare the images. It's really hard to tell when you are on your back and only get a limited field of view. I think its also the same part of the frame that holds the lower control arms.
MH, thanks for the vendor info. Going to check.

    I made a decision

Today i bought a Detroit Axle rebuilt rack off EBay
    $226.45

Minus 10 percent off coupon today, plus a $25 core charge credit (with free return shipping)

It should cost around $175 after rebates and coupon applied

It does come with a new Bushing kit,but I ordered Energy Suspension Bushing kit for $27 Off eBay as well just in case.

Still,it’s about 1/2 the price of Rack Doctor, which would be a refurb unit as well plus Rack Doctor makes you pay for your own return shipping

I will update when it arrives and also when it’s installed

Not to be a jerk but a lot of that doesn't apply to the 1st gen trucks, great if you have an 07-up though.

    1st gen part #'s are
    01-06 with rear sway
    44250-0C020 original
    44250-0C050 1st revision
    44250-0C041 2nd revision

    03-06 without rear sway
    44250-0C030

    00-02
    44250-0C010

The rack replacement is also a lot less time intensive since the rack is easily accessible since it's on the back of the crossmember.

Bringing this back from the dead....

Does anyone understand the difference between the racks w/ and w/o rear sway option (44250-0C030 vs 44250-0C041)? There is a significant price difference.

    Thank you.
