Squeaks and clatters

So I recently purchased a 2006 Tundra SR5 double cab and I am hearing some weird noises. Got 158000 miles on it. When I drive slow (like parking lot speed) I get a squeak in the back of the truck that sounds like a hamster wheel squeaking. It squeaks in tune to the throttle until higher speeds then goes away. At slow speeds while coasting I get a clattering noise from the rear of the truck. Neither happens all the time, but more often than not. Also a little bit of a clunk either right after slow takeoff or sometimes after being stopped for a few seconds. Had a dodge for years so I really don't know much about these. I have my suspicion that it is a u joint, but not sure.Any info would be most appreciated.

 

Get under there and put your hands on stuff. Grease the zerks on propeller(s). Check your carrier bearing bushing for wear (and play).

 

Yup u-joints or carrier bearing on the squeaks.

Look for loose spring retainers or sway bar links on the rattle.

 

Parts don't look too expensive. Would all new u joints and carrier bears b overkill?

 

Is it a do at home job or is there things that have to be pressed ?

 

Pressed. You can take off propeller and take it to your local truck big rig shop and they will do it all. Make sure to buy the Toyota OEM carrier bearing as the others may be cheap hollow stuff. Do the greaseable zerks.

 

Only thing I'll disagree with is the greaseable part. My u-joint of choice is the Spicer sealed joints if they're available mostly because I'm terrible at remembering to grease them.

 

I just bought an 06 access cab and it does the same things.

 

Not sure if it's the same for double cabs but 2wd doesn't have grease zerks anywhere on the drive shaft.

I remember the clunk you describe being a common thing for double cabs but cannot recall what it is. Search around for double cab tundra clunk in older forums and you might find it.

 

Recently bought my tundra with 232k miles and i hear a constant squeak coming from the rear as well only when I back up though...

 

Update on the squeaks...... After some hassle I have gotten some good tires now and the mts are history. Took it to the Toyota dealership shortly after posting the original post and they said that noise was common for the truck. I have since put 10000 miles on the truck and the u joints are definitely sloppy. The guy at the tire shop says so much slop he can't align it... Wtf..... So tomorrow I guess it's off to the dealership to see what's going on.

 

Keep us posted on this. I’m at 160k on my 02’. Getting ready to replace the center carrier bearing and 4 u-joints (cardan joint) on the rear propeller.

How many miles you have?

 

That doesn't make any sense. The driveshaft u-joints have nothing to do with getting an alignment done.

Ball joints would make sense.

 

Was thinking the same thing. Also, my front end squeaked bad until it was rebuilt with all OEM stuff.

Could be the u-joints are going bad too as well as the front end stuff.

 

Yep I think it's all going bad.... I am at 162000, so I guess it's about time.

 

Yep. I paid a shop to do my front end and they did a terrific job. All OEM except the cam bolts which he said he wanted to use because they were better and could allow a better setting. I have no idea but its running great. So quiet and smooth.

New lower control arms, new lower ball joints, new sway links, new shocks, new rotors/brake pads, new CV axles, cam bolts, etc. ran about $3400. I priced all the parts around $1700, so two days labor was another $1700.

Prepping to do the rear prop carrier bearing replace. Will probs take the shaft up to a Heavy Truck Center and have them do the 4 joints. OEM Carrier bearing cost about $135 online. Shop said he’d do the joints for $100 parts and labor. Will double check that number one more time.

 

My 05 DC has a squeak on the right somewhere towards the rear door every time I go over a speed bump or make a right turn and tweak the body. So frustrating. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
