My last three trucks have ran smaller diameter wheels and I have never owned a truck with anything larger then 16s. The idea and popular trend in offroad was to maximize amount of rubber by using smaller wheels and increasing tire size. Larger "rims" were for showing off and looking good rather then function.
Jump to 2018 when I now own a new wonderful Tundra and stock wheels are 18-20in diameter. Looking at the cost to replace with similar size and little more aggressive tire for rougher conditions is blowing my mind.
Is it common or accepted as ok to use 16-17 in wheels with larger tires? Thanks

I agree with everything you said about more sidewall rubber and smaller diameter wheel. Plus, tires for 17” can be a bit cheaper (my set of 285/75/17s were close to $400 cheaper than the comparable 285/70/18s).

But the Tundra’s brakes are so big, the smallest you can go is 17”. Unfortunately, only a few 17” wheels fit (Methods, Icon Six Speeds and Rebounds) thus far. Maybe more selection may be offered in the future, though.

Rock Warrior wheels (OEM) are a great option for those that like off roading. Plus, 17" tires are cheaper from what I've seen.

Thanks for the info and confirmation that I can run 17". I will confirm with Method on what model wheels will work with my Tundra. Do you know the backspacing numbers for your 17"? Thanks

Yes, my Icon Rebounds are +25 offset. I don’t remember the backspacing, though. The 17” Method wheels are +0 offset if I remember correctly. Also don’t know their backspacing. The OEM Rockwarriors are stock offset, which is about +50 to +60 or so.

Thanks. I've been trying to work my way through that huge thread. I'm also finding my knowledge/visualization of offset/backspacing is making me crazy. I do not want tires to stick out beyond fender wells and am only going to level front using bils 5100s on middle setting. Trying to find good wheel to wrap with 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. thank guys a bunch.

check the Icon six speed/ Rebound specs for Tundra. I think they have it done perfect for 17"s on Tundras.

I’m saving monies for these, FN wheels 17”, about a $1000 for 5 and a bit cheaper if you pay cash which I will do they’re about 2 hours from me (CA). They’re hub-centric and I’ve been told they are 22lbs a wheel!!!!. Definitely my choice.

If I ever upgrade to true 35x12.5’s, I’ll likely go down to these from 18’s. That’s a friggin gorgeous, simple wheel! I think my BFD’s are 23-24 lbs a wheel, so that’s pretty light.

There are a few other wheel mfgrs making 17’s for the Tundra. KMC, Fuel, Innov8, TR etc. Here are some 17” SOTA Offroad with powdercoated rock rings on my old truck.

For my new truck I went with FN Six shooters through Dustin@ FN. Love the understated JDM look, quality, and great offsets of his wheels.
Just waiting for one 35x12.5 Toyo RT that got lost in shipping  then I’ll post up new pics for you guys.

FN wheels has a 17x9 five star (like the ones on the truck) with +25mm for our tundras? I didn’t see those on their website.

Where are you getting the intel on these wheels? I can’t track them down anywhere on the interweb.

A light weight 17” wheel is exactly what I’m looking for on my tundra and the TRD Rock Warrior wheels don’t really do it for me.

Tmu, offset and backspacing are the same thing. One is measured in mm’s (offset) and one is measured in inches (backspace). Typically you need only one measurement, not both

^ That looks awesome but I couldn’t live with the offset of those wheels. I went with 18’s. Great middle ground between 17’s and 20’s imo
