Not much required as far as tools. The boat repair guys that taught me often use a Makita da3000r fitted with a roloc grinding discs for prep. Makita doesn't make 'em anymore and you've gotta find 'em used but it's an incredibly handy tool.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Makita-DA3...040095?hash=item1cb7a3a79f:g:7FwAAOSwsj5bhq5f

A nice metal, bubble roller, a sander and you're pretty much set.

I only met him once but I love Jimmy. He's friendly and easy-going, has made his son his side-kick and keeps him close, plus he knows how to do everything!

New topic: Alex, next time you have time (I dunno, don't you catch a cold once every other year, like the rest of us? ;)), will you please transfer all your original truck build info and pics from TundraTalk over to here? I made my way through the first 3 chapters, although not able to view pics unless I join the forum. I don't want to join that forum which, by all accounts, has gone the way of flip-phones and 26's :D. Plus, that promise you made in paragraph 18 of Chapter 3... definitively need pics to get those results . I really need to see photos :angrygirl:.

Anyway, somehow I got shut out before I could finish chapter 4. Whenever I try, I get routed to join up. Can you help??

haha! I was going to transfer everything over before I even started this thread, but I would have to search and upload every picture individually. Then place each one in the correct spot. My guess is several hours of work

Why don't you just join the forum?? They won't spam you or anything and you don't have to post there. You should see how many forums I belong to that I never use

Hmmn. What about flip-phones and 26" and moving with the times? :D

(First I'll try again from another location, see if I can "beat" the lock-out with another IP address.)

LOL! Trust me, I moved on from that forum. That why I'm here. But it would seriously be a lot of work to transfer the pics. The text will transfer easily, but I have a thousand pictures scattered on my hard drives that I would have to search through

Okay. The story's cool though; worth it if you can do it. It is a good read for anyone (like me) who wants to live vicariously through the first years, and use your experiences to figure out where to skip the "first" mod and save up for the "right" mod. Your build is a great reference for the 'build once and right' 'buy once, cry once' groupie.

trust me. if i could justify the upgrade to 27.5, i'd be all over it. my sb66 serves me well for the trails i ride and the 303rdh handles the rough stuff at keystone, as well as the flow/jump trails at winter park, just fine. the 303 is a little on the heavy side and dated but it's a fun bike to ride. with the hand surgeries the past few months, i've only gotten 1 DH day in this summer but, winter park is open for another few weeks so maybe i'll be able to sneak in another day.

Hey man I totally understand! My first bike was a 29er hard tail and I rode the piss out of it. Its just like trucks, it doesn't mater what set up you have as long as you can drive. Same with bikes. If you can ride you can ride

    run what you brung homie

ha. my favorite bike ever was a single speed 29er hard tail. i shouldn't have sold it. so much fun to ride. i'd like to build another but there's already 4 bikes in the garage, 3 pairs of skis, 2 paddle boards and 3 surf boards. and the truck...

i've been off the dh bike for so long, i need to start making some visits to valmont to get comfortable again in the air.

Researching last night I came upon a post of yours in TT but it was a little cryptic and I couldn't quite glean the answer. But you don't have spacers for the RW wheels?

The problem for me is that if I bring my truck down there I'll just want to wheel and drink beer the whole time LOL I have to keep my MTB and truck trips separate. Maybe I'll get a case and fly in

Hahaha! It was as though I called you in here! I'd just read in some other thread that you rock a flip phone. I almost replied to that, but the conversation had moved on, so I let it go.

I have a G'zOne. And another one unopened on the shelf. Both orange. :)

Here's some pictures from our trip to Spangler Hills and Trona Pinnacles this weekend. We started in Barstow and did all dirt; Black Mountain, Red Mountain, Spangler, Trona. We even did part of a SCORE course

Ok update on The Truck. For the last few trips I have been feeling a slight "tick" in the steering when turning right. Its been steadily getting worse, but its so mild and difficult to feel that I haven't been motivated to chase it down. Well, in October we did a trip to Anza and I was able to duplicate it for Bruce @papasmurf . We didn't have a clue, but at least I knew I wasn't going crazy. anyways, while prepping for the big Turkey Run in November, I had to do brakes. I found that my drivers tie rod end was loose and had some play in it. Well, I thought I found the problem so Bruce and I swapped it. Well, that didn't fix the problem. At that point we decided to really poke around and try to figure it out. We found that the steering rack bushings were shot. When moving the tire left/right, you could see the rack shifting. When turning right, the rack would shift and push the steering shaft into the shock hoop. There is a clamp on the shaft and I was feeling the clamp hitting the shock hoop; but only when turning right. I have a poly bushing kit that's been sitting in my garage for over a year LOL. But I figured it would be ok for one more run and I didn't have time to do anything about it anyway. So I filed a little off the clamp so it wouldn't hit as much and called it good enough.

    Big mistake.

On the second to last day of the Turkey Run, 25 hard technical dirt miles from pavement, I was trying to climb some melons when I felt a pop in the steering and then it went loose. There are two big bolts that hold the steering rack to the frame crossmember. I had pulled the driver side bolt up through the crossmember and whenever I turned right, the rack would lift. @Vizsla found a big washer for me. We pulled the bolt, added the washer, and tightened it down. I called the trip a day early and limped it home.

This past weekend I decided to attack the rack bushings and Bruce offered to help. First of all, huge thanks to Bruce. Dinner was delicious, the bedroom was comfortable, and he went way out of his way to help me do this job. This is a very difficult job. It took almost 4 hrs to pull the rack out and there was really only a handful of bolts and fittings. I spent over an hour just getting the lip of the bushing separated so we could start actually pounding them out. If anybody is going to attempt this let us know, we have several tips we can give you to make the job easier.

So it turned out that my passenger bushing was fine. Drivers was toast. The bolt sleeve in the bushing was wallowed out and oval. The rubber was shredded. All the movement caused the welds in the crossmemeber to fail and that's why I pulled the bolt through the crossmember. Bruce welded the bolt sleeve on the top and we welded a washer to the bottom in order to strengthen it. We did the same to the passenger side and also ran another bead on the top as well. The new bushings are definitely going to be a huge improvement in reliability. They're high quality carbon poly bushings with internal sleeves. The steering is much tighter now and more responsive. I didn't realize how sloppy it was getting.

I've got 66k hard miles on The Truck. The bushing has been bad for a long time. I just had no idea what was going on. I guarantee that is why I lost a tie rod end too. My advice to you guys is to swap to poly if you plan to put real off road miles on your truck. We're going to do Bruce's truck next.
