Took the 2018 CM Cement rig and the fam down to southern Oregon today for a weekend of camping. Truck did fine pulling the travel trailer, but the TSS...oh lord, the TSS.

When it was working, the radar cruise control actually made things much easier. The truck would automatically adapt to slow pokes in front of me, and it just overall made things much less stressful. However, twice on the trip the radar crapped out and showed the following fault condition:
    upload_2018-9-1_18-8-50.jpg
I don’t understand two things about this fault: 1) on both occassions, it occurred after I’d been driving with the radar cruise control in use for over a freaking hour. You’d think that if something was going to fail, it wouldn’t decide to fail after behaving for quite a while. 2) the indicated fault condition WILL NOT CLEAR. Okay, TSS, you’re a moron and you think the sensor is dirty. I got it, thanks. DOES IT HAVE TO COME ON AND STAY ON, BLOCKING OUT ANYTHING ELSE I MIGHT WANT TO KNOW (like, idk, GPS guidance, for example)? Overall I’m pleased with the truck, but the inability for the TSS to adapt to a mild lift and a grill swap (yes, I have the @ARES mod) is driving me f-ing nuts. Thank you all for listening, I’ll see myself out now...

This is the reason why I have not installed a lift or pro grill....and I want to bad! Guess I will see if the dealership will do it so it stays under warranty. Sorry to hear about your issues. I would suggest just taking it to the dealer and see what happens. Bad ass truck by the way!!

Probably nothing wrong with your TSS. You cannot just relocate the sensor, the slightest angle change is huge... Mine in the stock location is flawless at 4” lift, 3” lift, and 2.5” lift. That said I’m not naive, the readings are skewed from the lift. Swap back to stock and see.:)

Let us know. I hate safety features. Only one I like is back up camera, makes trailering so easy

Ready Lift 3/1, 275/70/18 BFG KO tires, fuel 18 x 9 wheels. Standard stuff, IMHO, which makes it more frustrating. It’s not like I have some weirdo setup on my rig

I’m sorry, I don’t think you understand. Mud, ice, snow will shut the system down. Water, especially if allowed to pool in different size beads on the lens can provide false readings instead of shut down. There is millions in the surface ra of the factory pieces, most of that in liability. I have no beef, I care about our members and don’t think you understand the liability of it all.

Can you shed any light on the recalibration process? Is it something only a tech can do? Can we do it with tech stream?

There are rumors that when relocating the radar sensor with one of the several brackets that are available that it can take 30 miles of driving for it to automatically recalibrate itself.
    Any experience with this?

    Vizsla,
I get what you are saying about these aftermarket grill sensor cover mods. To be clear are you also saying that a 2018 limited (or SR5) that is changed to a TRD Pro grill and Toyota factory sensor cover would also need to be recalibrated because the pro has a different calibration and location? What about a 2018 limited changed to a 2018 SR5 grill....would it need recalibration because it was disconnected and reconnected in the same location? Do you buy in to the theory that the system needs to maintain the factory rack to work without throwing error codes? If I have a 2018 limited and have nearly 10k miles without any errors, then do you think I could lift the truck without touching any sensors / grill swaps and still be error free? If so, then in that scenario what do you think the exact changes are in the functioning of the TSS system? Thanks for your input.

First of all, Bullshit. You are playing with lives. I’m done after this. Toyota really wanted this to look like this, had nothing to do with how it has to work. There is more to that garnish than you think...

We all want the same thing: an outcome that works for everyone, so we should be collaborative. The TSS is, IMHO, no different than the safety on a firearm. When first handling weapons, we were all taught that the safety is a tool: like all tools, they’re only as good as the user. If we have to rely on the TSS to tell us to stop or to slow down, then at least ten decision points upstream were failures. The TSS is one ingredient in a casserole of solutions geared towards safety. I do not believe that ANYONE is “playing with lives”. I do believe that, when I get behind the wheel of my vehicle, the operation of it is my responsibility and that I am liable for the consequences of said operation, TSS faults be damned.

If this thread degrades into personal attacks, then I sincerely regret ever posting it. I posted what I did because 1) I’m frustrated with TSS (like a lot of folks), and 2) I’ve found that this is a forum where owners of a common vehicle platform are rewarded for helping each other. We all chose (perceived?) well designed trucks based in some part on trust in The Toyota Way. It’s clear that TTW has failed us, and as owners with years’ worth of payments to make, it’s going to be on us to find a solution, because we all know that Toyota won’t voluntarily take any liability on this issue.

I don't have the TSS, but my sensor faults all the time. If the light conditions are just right, it will fault. Just an example... When I am driving home at the same time everyday, on the same stretch of road, it always faults in exactly the same spot, unless it is cloudy out.

I really hate these features. I wish they would refine them and get all the bugs worked out before they release them to consumers. But, I guess we are the guinea pigs for Toyota.

I’m sorry, this is not a personal attack at all. You started a thread about your TSS system, yet you modified it. I told you what is wrong. I’m not being a dick, you chose to put you, your family, and tow a trailer while relying on a safety system mod that might work. Should I remain silent with what I know? Probably...
Probably lost, but when I say I care about members your one of them. You do not understand product liability. That said, it is not lexan... Has a very specific ra, and factors in trivial details like UV exposure. And unfortunately, you apparently did not know about the different calibration for the Pro. This is why the free one, and the other available one just preserve the original azimuth. In both those designs the sensor does not see that it is moved. Within that, you can play with lift heights, but you already know that. Best of luck to you.

    Couple things:

First off, @Steve89gt please read the owners manual about towing and cruise control. I know for a fact my 12’ Tundra owners manual said not to do this. I found this odd coming from HD diesels where I could tow in cruise control, pick my nose, and chew bubble gum all at once. I haven’t towed anything in Oregon (been a while since driving through), and it could be as flat as a board and CC is ok in this situation. Just check on it if you will since my curiosity is now getting the best of me.

For the rest involved in this thread, been a really good debate without getting personal. Appreciate that. You nerds get back at it.

Don’t be afraid. It is a little joke at this point when my safety stuff goes off. We all curse at it and say “who would want this crap”, but it is a joke, it helps a lot. Mine is flawless, but I knew where I was headed with it. Had suspension in my hands before truck even arrived. Just don’t be naive and think you can mod a safety system and have it work correctly, or a have a warranty.
Don’t take it the wrong way please, but it is perfected. The fact that it can tell you when unavailable is part of said perfection. There is just limitations to it, for Tundra owners it is clearly explained in the owners manual. I blast through the desert at what is surely warp speed with mine on, figuring that ought to confuse it. I got disappointed, worked fine...

@Vizsla and @ARES thanks for the good read, learning a lot! What do you recommend then for those of us who want to lift their trucks but are limited by the TSS system?
For example, I have an 18 Limited and want to swap to the 19 Pro grille but I haven’t installed a lift yet. Should I expect the system to throw error codes since the angle will be off? If I put the TRD pro suspension on along with the new grille should it work properly or will it still be off without the TRD pro specific calibration?
Another option would be to keep the current grille or a honeycomb grille but I’d still be lifting it a couple inches and changing the angles. Your thoughts? Thanks!

    quite the read!

    my .02
-new pro grill looks like ass
-Toyotas cover piece looks like crack of ass
-selling a part that impacts a safety system on a vehicle is about the riskiest behavior I can imagine. it is pretty much begging to be financially ruined. I think becoming a pimp for midget hookers in downtown Chicago is probably less likely to cause financial ruin than selling a piece that impacts a vehicle safety system.
-purchasing something from an individual that modifies a safety system designed by Toyota is similarly risky and foolish.
-discussing any part of the design of said home made piece is just offering material for anyone who sues you. 'look here your honor, the designer failed to consider the whosiwhatzit gigamahoozer part and I rear ended someone and now my show winning Lhasa apso is dead!'

props to anyone who is working to improve these vehicles and I hope Toyota sees this and hires ARES! but brother I also hope you run into no troubles with this thing. you can see in this thread how folks can react just from a simple malfunction that caused zero damage. imagine what happens in the case of an accident!

reading this thread and others has helped me make up my mind to keep my 2018 limited grill and TSS sensor in the stock location. I think I'll keep the stock suspension until the warranty runs out and by that time we will know more about how the lift effects the safety system.

I would agree...except that dealerships are, somehow, still selling lifted Tundras...like this one, right down the road from me:

    https://www.beavertontoyota.com/new.../2018-toyota-tundra-beaverton-oregon-34765859

That color is starting to grow on me, BTW. Anyhow, I have a difficult time believing that the folks at the dealer are doing anywhere near the heavy-lifting that we as owners have done, in terms of educating ourselves and making good decisions that will last the life of the vehicle.

    @ColoradoTJ

Regarding towing with CC, it quite frankly didn't occur to me that Toyota would recommend against this practice. That having been said, I'll take a look.

To The Rest Of The Fine Folks In The Forum:

Thanks for the "vigorous" debate. I will point out that a contributing factor to my personal TSS issue may very well be "towing whilst" lifted. It's a wrinkle that I hadn't considered. Also, so that everyone is aware, I did not have my radar sensitivity set to the value specified by @ARES. Somehow, I misinterpreted and thought that it was supposed to be set to the MAX setting (three green bars); it sounds like it's supposed to be on MIN (one green bar), so I'm going to regroup and try again.

Also, I drove my fucking travel trailer into a pole today, so FML...

Local dealership sell brand new 2018's with a 3"+ lifts all the time and they usually have a pro grille included. I was at the State Fair yesterday and they had a 2018 sport lifted 6 inches with a 2019 pro grille. When I purchased my pro grille they showed me how they relocate the sensor.
