This is a side by side comparison of the Toy Oil Filter next to a Mobil1. Is bigger better? Or, is weight the better metric? Should your filter pleats be dense, or should they be light and let things flow?

I think it really depends on the quality of the filter. Heavier usually means better quality parts, but not always.

I only run the Toyota filter you have there. I have run K&N a few times when they came in oil packages.

I doubt you'll get any definitive answers unless we have one of them oil analysis nerd guys here to do a comparison.

This is exacty what I did. Bought 5 online from a dealership for about $25. When I buy the Mobil1 Full Synthetic oil its at the auto store as their pricing is usually better than online AND they do a ‘free filter’ deal with the oil.

Thats the reason I had the Mobil1 filter which I’m running right now. I’ll probs do a filter change around 2k miles with the Toy brand. This may be what I do from here out as the oil purchase will come with the ‘free’ filters. And I bought 5 Toy filters online. I’m going to have filters out the whazoo.

More on the differences, the Mobil1 is much heavier. The metal walls of both ‘felt’ similar in thickness when squeezed. Obviously, the Toy is bigger.

Anyone dialed in on the gear oils for the 02’? Its the limited slip. Front calling for 75w-90 and rear 90w. Hard to find straight 90w. Confused a bit on whether the use a non-Toy brands OR the Toy brand for double cost!

Hypoid GL-5 for LSD 75w-90 (spec’d) or Straight Synthetic for LSD? Cost difference is HUGE Toy vs. name brands. Might need to go to stealership for the 90w (rear diff) as its hard to find.

Walmart out of stock. Still having a hard time finding straight 90w. Might have to go 80w-90 per cold temp specs. Will call stealership tomorrow for more info.

I am a yota junkie, but the oem filters are average at best. Mobil 1 extended performance is a much better option. I would use the Wix also. #1 choice is the Ea K 51 Amsoil 25k filter. I own and operate a shop and service a fleet of Tacoma reg cabs 2wd for a printing company and for the last 8 years I have been running them on 15k service intervals with Amsoil signature series oils and Ea filters. Have never had internal engine issues. Some of the trucks are over 300k. Check out their products at amsoil.com. the proof is in the pudding.

My rear diff is calling for straight 90w or 80w-90 (in cold). Wondering what all my service mechanics have been putting in all these years as thats something I’ve trusted others to do the right thing. Seems 90w is hard to find unless I buy the Toy stuff for $36 a quart (online pricing). Still haven’t called stealership.

Next tech question: Can I use the limited slip gear oil in the transfer case? Reason for asking is the way the quantities work out I’ll have almost 1 quart extra left over from the front diff (LS) which is enough to do the transfer case. Otherwise, I need to buy additional 75w-90 non (LS) oil at an extra expense.

Spoke with stealership parts dept. and they confirmed one can use Oil 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip in all three compartments (transfer case, front differential, and rear differential).

That makes things easy and efficient as far as purchasing and install. Going to use the Mobil1 Synthetic. Need 5.4 quarts to do all 3 locations.

Anyone know the specs sizes for both the drain and fill bolts in all 3 case locations? Will need to buy the special metric sockets (torx?).

    2002 4wd LS.

You memory may be correct according to the Youtube I watched. Thanks. It will be a while before I do these changes so there is plenty time for correction if needed. Are these fill plugs metric torx?

Amazon has them but I found them cheaper at the dealership. Drain plugs with magnets and washers.

I’m assuming my existing plugs are already magnetic as I think the manual suggests? I will need to buy the new crush washers. My main concern right now is size and types of sockets to purchase.

I’m assuming the fill plugs get reused?

The drain plugs get reused, but with new washers?

Socket Sizes? I will be starting my search for used sockets (torx?).

No wonder you were recently promoted, correct as usual. 24mm for rear diff and transfer case drain/fill and 10mm hex for front diff.
