Want to learn how to properly lube the drive shaft in my Tundra

My 2017 Tundra is my first 4x4. I like to do as much of the routine maintenance as I can. I am coming up on 10,000 miles. I don’t have any experience with lubricating the drive shaft and I am hoping you guys can walk me through it. What kind of grease to use, how to know when the grease zerk is full, grease frequency, how many zerks need grease, etc.

I understand one of the rear wheels needs to be jacked off the floor so the drive shaft can be rotated as needed.

Thanks in advance for all of your help...

NGLI No. 2 lithium base, grease until all seals purge, I do it every oil change, and I've never had to jack the rear wheels up. The front driveshaft can be a pain; there's a little debris shield to the driver side of it.

    This could derail very quickly....

I have only done mine twice so I dont recall exactly. I think there are 6 zerks. I used whatever grease the manual recommended. I pump it in until I notice a little starting to squeeze out. Do it every oil change and I haven't needed to jack it up to do it, theres enough play in the shaft to reach all the fittings.
I'm sorry that isn't all that helpful.

    That is extremely helpful...thank you.
How many zerks need to be filled...front and rear?

My Tundra has a one-piece driveshaft in the rear so I only have four. I think that all other configurations have a two-piece driveshaft so you may have more.

On mine you have to use something like this, to access 1 of the zerks .

Mobil 1 synthetic red is in my grease gun.
It's what I use on all my machinery so hopefully it is ok for the tundra.

Just looked it up...it is a #2 so I'm good.

Do you use two different kinds of grease?

    OK...thank you.

Is Mobil 1 (red grease) a good choice?

You should be good with any main brand as long as its lithium base NGLI No. 2

I ignore the molybdenum disulphide part for the double-caran joint.

    X4.....or 5ish....

Have done this on every truck, every oil change. This is also when I get underneath with some CRC SP-400 and hit all of the normal rust areas (although I am starting to experiment with some PB Blaster Corrosion Stop)

I like CAM2 products for grease. Used them a lot in a commercial/industrial environment at my last job.
I use CAM2 ULTRA580EP#2 on almost everything now. Driveshafts, trailer bearings, ball joints, suspension linkage on dirt bike...It's the only grease I have purchased for a few years now.

My mom-and-pop Carquest in town carries it. Not sure if all Carquests do. At my last place of employment we ordered in bulk from a Cam2 distributor, this was in PA. I don't believe it's available anywhere else on the open market (grainger, Amazon, msc...)

We don't have those here (it's Advance Auto) and unfortunately they don't seem to carry it. Found another one w/moly as well from Valvoline. Edited my post above.

Put it in neutral, apply parking brake, and chok a wheel then you can spin your drive shaft.

i highly doubt dealers take the time to do this. i do it every other oil change too. i swear my junk came from the factory without any grease in the fittings. getting them to purge took a lot of grease, then not much was needed on subsequent oil changes.

purchased this gun locally at tool supply

I'm really impressed with our collective self control. With a title like this I expected it to be derailed immediately

I grin a little when I see this post come up, but the title is too easy. I hit the low hanging fruit sometimes, but there's no sport in it when you're hitting lobs all day lol.

Mobil 1 has great products. I use the STP moly b lith. The rear four zerks are easily serviced. Pump till the grease flows out the bushings which pushes all that dirt out too. The front two on the 4wd prop will not accept grease. Maybe need the needle?

It says "lubricate propeller shaft and tighten bolts" ...
Do you know the torque spec on these bolts? Are they 21mm or 25mm bolts?

Looks like it was from an '07 manual of some sort. Would like to find a more recent version if possible.
