Tips for installing Bilstein 6112?

Just picked up a set of 6112's from Boss 4x4. Can't wait to install. Any tips, trials or tribulations for a quick install??

 

Well first you need to decide what height your wanting to raise your truck. 3rd setting up from bottom 1.9 seems to give a good level +/- .25

If you got them preassembled then its not to bad to swap over a complete coilover. There is a tutorial thread on here somewhere.

If you didnt get them as a complete coilover then I would advise at getting a set of KYB top hats/ strut mounts.

With the 6112's set at 1.9", isn't the only thing that needs to be done is the shock swap in the front and an alignment?

My plan is 6112's in the front at 1.9", powder coat the existing TRD rims matte black, and upgrade to 295/70/18's. Is that doable without doing anything else?

 

Yeah I got them pre assembled at 1.9 for ease of install. I didn't want to mess around with coil compressor from local auto store tool rental...

Make sure you are turning the proper side of the LCA cam bolts when you loosen those. I remember that being the forward/motor facing side of both the front and rear bolts.

 

I know my limitations, I am definitely going to have a “professional“ install mine!

 

Ok 6112's finally installed. Install went as planned... unfortunately on the 3rd setting my nose is slightly higher than the rear. Going to give the springs a few miles to settle before alignment. If not I will probably drop to 2nd setting 1.3"...

Dang, that's only on the 3rd setting? Seems a bit higher than most other pics I've seen. Looks good though!

 

I got the same slightly nose high numbers as well. After awhile it settled to about even. Unfortunately any weight in the bed and it then goes back to looking nose high. I have shackles on my list to do.

 

I definitely have over 1.9 inches right now on 3rd setting more like 2.25...hoping it settles in nice!

 

Yep...3rd setting, thinking maybe I should have done 2nd..ugh. That's why I am waiting a few miles before alignment in case I decide to lower to 2nd setting..

Yeah...all by hand since my air compressor took a crap last week!

Naa man, your good. It only starts high. Go take a drive around and swerve back and forth to get both sides to compress a bit. It will drop right into place.

Immediately after I installed mine, I was also about 2.5 inches. Called Darren at Boss to figure out what happened and he said just give it a bit. Sure enough, it goes down.

 

I just installed mine last night at the 1.9" setting. This morning, about 8 hours after install, it was sitting at exactly 2" passenger and 2 .25" driver. So for some reason, I got the opposite of the infamous " driver's lean, " at least for now.

For what it's worth, mine is a 5.7L double cab 4x4 with stock bumper. Only added weight I have up front is the aluminum TRD Pro skid plate, which I don't think weighs that much (maybe 40-50 lbs?). I thought I remember reading a post somewhere claiming that double cabs normally yield 1/4" to 1 /2" higher lift with 6112s than crewcabs, which is what I was hoping for and was the main reason I set the clip on the 3rd setting from the bottom when assembling them. But either mine's an anomaly or the double cab claim is one of those that may be true for some but not all.

 

Whew that makes me feel better!! I am at about 2.5 now so I hope they settle in a few miles just like yours!

 

Any issues with VSC or anything after install?? Did you do the zero calibration I hear some others mention??

 

I just installed my 6112's and the spring compressor was the scariest part. Beefy! I did OME rear shocks,

 

Wow you set on highest setting...what did you get for lift??

 

It was over 3" once I lowered it Sunday, I havent driven it yet but today it is about 2.75" or so. stock 275/65/18 with 1" shackle in the rear. I have some 33"s ready to go on once I get the alignment done

 

No issues here. 2in lift in the front, nice and level. Rear stayed stock.

 

Stock UCA's? Alignment dialed in nice??

Yes, stock UCA. Only suspension mod was the 6112s set at 1.9in clip, one below the top. That's exactly why I went this route, didn't want to gamble with needing UCAs if I lifted 3/1. I played that game on my FJ and never got it into perfect alignment.
