What the clunk?

Just bought the truck 2weeks ago. I've put 400km and 350km was the drive home from the out of town dealer.

Driving to work this morning I heard a weird clunk every time I hit a bump or turned creating any body roll. When I got out to inspect my truck I give the ehaust tail pipes a wiggle and what do I find.... My passenger side rear shock absorber laying horizontal bouncing off my tail pipe.

Sheared right off. !!!!

The toytec boss lift was installed by the dealer last May and has seen 20 000 km of highway driving. The truck was very clean underneath. I'm convinced that it might have seen a stretch of gravel construction a few times on it hiway travels but nothing extreme that's for sure.

I called my dealer who will send the shock back to toytec for inspection and provide possible warranty reimbursement but still 150$ out of pocket currently.

Luckily my brother is traveling up this weekend for a visit and can stop by the dealer (350km south) and bring up the shock for me tomorrow.

What the heck toytec?????

 

I was able to get the service history on the truck this evening and found that the drivers side rear shock was replaced at the end of March of this year, but it is not clear why. Not sure of it was leaking and thus added stress on the other one caused it to fail now. Or the other side failed the same way. They obviously just replaced just what was broken and now the cycle continues?????

At this point do I replace both, or carry faith that the other one being only a month or so old, should bring me peace that I should not have to worry about this product.

Two failures in less then 2 months and some of that time is sitting on lot a dealer waiting for a new buyer.

Again what the heck toytec!

 

2015 crewmax platinum with a toytec boss ultimate kit. 35" rubbers purchased and lifted by the dealer in May of last year. 25,000km on it now. One newly replaced rear shock (march 2016) and one broken one. I'm not happy.

 

I'm surprised too. There has not been too many similar issues like yours reported here. Not comforting I know. Wow. I'm sure you will find out what's going on soon enough.

I found this thread within the fj forum last night and sad to say there are much more in the other Toyota forums where people are sharing the same findings.

My big question now is knowing that there was a problem with the toytec boss shock and bushing, and that recently the drivers was replaced, do I replace both now (one broken and one that was recently replaced) to insure they are both the revised stock? Or is there a physical way to determine if the new shock installed is the latest version and should be fine.
I'd be out of pocket 150$ for each shock until toytec conferms failure, and what if they do nothing for the one that was recently installed as it is clearly new.... I guess I eat the 150$ for peace of mind ?

 

You never know what kind of abuse the previous owner did to that truck. Sucks but that is part of buying a used truck. Hopefully you will get it fixed soon.

The underside of those frame rails are clean enough to to state that I doubt the past owner ever went through a muddy puddle in a parking lot.

That's a question for Toytec not us.

 

well it's all done. Big thanks to the parts boys at Cochrane Toyota in Alberta and my brother for making the trip up north today for me.

Both shocks are installed. We will see what toytec says when I ship them a broken one and a newly installed old known for failure shock. Worse case I eat the cost on the one for peace of mind.

The two shock had a different style of serial numbers. Even though the first set of numbers are the same there was a second set on the older stock version of shocks. Well at least to my findings.

Just my finding, I'll call on Monday to see if there is any merit in my discoveries.
