IS THIS A GOOD DEAL on a Used or New Tundra???

First off, Welcome to Tundras.com if you are new!

It seems we get a lot of these posts, mostly new members asking about a Tundra that they are interested in and much of the same info and advice is repeated over and over.

A “good deal” is the one you are happy with! Hopefully after you have researched the truck or vehicle you are interested in. Research does not constitute asking on a vehicle forum like Tundras.com. Most are inquiring about a used Tundra, but there are for new as well. Below is some useful information to use when buying a vehicle.

    Used Vehicles:

Prices are going to vary a bit depending on your location regionally. Values will depend on what area you live; city vs. suburb vs. more remote areas. Used vehicles will cost more at a Dealerships/Private Lots Vs. Individual.

The Dealer or Lot will be asking for full Retail value or more knowing they can finance anyone with decent credit. Dealerships should be more credible while many Private Lots are not always the most forth coming, they can hide things, add something shiny to distract from something else. The Dealer or Lot is usually more convenient than individual seller, has vehicle detailed and looking nice but at a price. The listed price should be negotiable within reason; it never hurts to “Haggle” over the price. Think about it, wouldn’t you want Max dollar if you were selling but can accept something lower? Usually the longer a vehicle is on a lot the more negotiable the price will be. Also “end of month” seems to inspire better deals for monthly sales figures.

An individual seller will usually ask for less than Dealer, better than what it could be traded in for but less than retail. Meeting with sellers is not always ideal and can be inconvenient. In my experience it has been always been worthwhile buying from individuals; Having saved thousands of dollars and get a better feel of the how the owner has taken care of it. It does take more time; weeks or even months to find that great deal.

Regardless of which seller you may purchase from always use pricing tools like N.A.D.A. & Kelly Blue Book. These tools factor in Trim Model, mileage, over-all condition, and accessories. A seller should be close to these values not thousands off. Carfax is also a great tool for vehicle maintenance and repair history, dealers should provide, if considering private party get a quick subscription for peace of mind.

    New vehicles:

Prices are more fixed. Timing; time of year and month will affect new vehicle prices. Sometimes pricing is negotiable and other times not so much. Adders like warranties and accessories can sometimes be included to sweeten the deal. The more you can get from a dealer the sweeter your deal. It never hurts to ask for things like nerf bars, bed liner, ext. warranty etc. There are some on-line tools like TrueCar.com that can aid in what new vehicles are selling for and what incentives to ask for. Visit multiple Dealers if possible and show them competitive offers. Typically, the high volume dealers will have better pricing.

Trade-Ins can be tricky. Know the value of your Trade-In beforehand; use NADA or Kelly Blue Book, maybe even have a CarMax offer (or similar) handy. Dealers can make a lot of money on Trade-Ins. They can try to persuade you that your Trade-In is worth much less than expected.

Lastly, consider taking someone else with you when purchasing a vehicle; someone somewhat knowledgeable about vehicles and the business end. Someone who is not as emotionally involved and one who can have a “second set of eyes” on everything. I am almost 50 yrs. old and will invite my father along to deal and haggle. He enjoys it and always has something to add. I know that I have gotten better deals with him along.

There are certainly other tools / methods to aid in a vehicle purchase. The above should get most off to a good start and hopefully into that “Good Deal”.

Winjet Rear brake lights, leather seats, BackFlip tonneau cover, Spyder headlights, Pro Grille, pop&lock
    All very good advice.

    I’d add:

Don’t become emotionally invested in a vehicle when buying from a dealer until the car is parked at your house. Even if you really want it, appear emotionally detached and point out as many faults as you can find. Give the “I guess it’ll work” attitude instead of appearing overly excited.

TEST DRIVE: make sure you like the handling. Tell the sales guy to hush while you listen to the engine and shift points. Play with the stereo and such goodies when back at the dealership if everything else is good to go. It’s also wise to walk around the vehicle, look under it and check for fluid leaks before and after the test drive of used vehicles. Even better: have a mechanic you trust inspect the used vehicle.

NEGOTIATE VEHICLE PRICE, NOT PAYMENTS: you can afford $700/mo for your new truck... ok, but now they can work things such as interest rates and length of the loan term in their favor.

DONT DISCUSS TRADE IN UNTIL YOU HAVE A PRICE ON THE NEW VEHICLE IN WRITING: this generally gives you the best price for each - fair market value. They have less room to wiggle profit in by packaging the deal for you. (I’m not entirely sure about this, maybe a dealer can comment... I bought from a friend of a friend when I got the tundra and he seemed to be much more comfortable taking a hit on the trade than the new truck....)

    Tundra Specific:
Based on feed back on this forum most people seem to save between 5&10% off msrp (vehicle only: not including back office addons, trade in, TTL) on the SR5. Some have said they got similar deals on their platinums or limiteds, but with much more limited stock I imagine the dealer will be less inclined to deal. TRD Pros are much more limited, so usually go for right around MSRP, some times dealer asks more....

Edmonds.com is another great resource with lots of tips such as what we’ve suggested.

Consumer reports has some good information as well, but it costs around $30 for a full report that includes detailed information about what you should pay in your area for the selected vehicle (buying new, not sure about used) Ive used it several times and it’s saved me several thousand dollars. Not really sure how well it compares with trucar.
