Do wheel spacers put a lot of stress on your ball joints!!?? Luckily, I was only backing in to a parking spot, but I just got off the HWY doing 65. :annoyed:

Thank you. Yes, this could have easily been disastrous and it makes me literally nauseous just thinking what I could have caused to others.

Did you do the factory recall on the ball joints way back in 2005?

I don't think this is a very common failure. How many miles on those BJs? Did you have any warning? I would think there would've been some indication in the steering or a noise at least before it got to the failure point?

No, I just bought it back in March of this year. Found it sitting in the weeds and I don't know too much about it. I still need to replace the timing belt as well. No sticker under the hood and I am at 190k. Great little pickup. But, this has really, really bothered me and I guarantee you that I am getting everything replaced on the suspension because of what I could have caused today had it happened at a high rate of speed! However, I will check on the recall and see if my truck is under it. I did see that the recall was for '02s thru like '04s. I also saw that this must be a common problem because I read my same situation over and over today on CarComplaints' website.

I did pull over today because something didn't feel right. I wiggled the wheels back and forth and couldn't figure out what it was. Now I know. I went to CarComplaints' website and read where many people had the same thing happen to them with the 01's.

Guess I've just never heard of it. 190k sounds like a good time replace the ball joints. I wonder if the owners manual states a time frame for replacing 'em?

I bet it does. And, I wish I would have changed them out once I bought it. My front-end wouldn't be sitting on the ground on top of a mountain, 6 hours away from home and tools.

    Sounds like time for:
New front upper and lower ball joints
    New CV axles
    New lower control arms
    New shocks
    New timing belt/water pump

Your insurance should cover towing to a local service shop. Rental too.
