It’s probably in your phone settings. I’m not sure how to properly set them, but I bet it happened during an “update”

I’m trying to mess with my settings to attempt to help, as mine is the same way.

I had this happen for the first month or so. Sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't. I ended up deleting the phone off the head unit and re-connecting them, between that and giving it time, it works perfectly now.

    edit:
Nevermind, i was not getting messages at all. No notifications. Still give it a shot unpairing and re-pairing.

I will have to try that.
I've had the same issue since the truck was new.

Personally I think there's something wrong with my software. Sometimes songs via Bluetooth will play as if I were holding down the skip/fast forward button.

I also configured my door locks to open when I open the driver door and have issues with the doors not unlocking as they should.

I have an iPhone 6S. I am getting incoming texts. If I am stopped I can hit ignore or display the message. If I'm moving I either ignore or let it read it. Just took the Tundra into the body repair shop so won't be able to look at the truck side settings for a week. Hope you figure it out.

Same issue here with an iPhone 8 on my 2014 non-JBL non-nav head unit. I have everything set up correctly, both call & contacts work, yet I get nothing with texts or emails...

    Everything. Literally.
My truck literally just started reading me my messages a day or so ago after I updated to iOS 11.2.5 or whatever the latest is. I didn’t change any settings at all, they just started popping up on my screen when a text comes thru.
Weirdest thing. And mildly annoying because it won’t read the messages unless the vehicle is stopped. I thought the point was to read them while in motion so you don’t have to look at your phone...
    wtf, Toyota.

iPhone guys, make sure your notifications are turned on in Bluetooth settings.

    Go to settings
    Bluetooth
    Toyota Tundra
    Hit the circle “I”
    Turn on “show notifications”

This fixed my issue and all text message now notify.

Thanks @Lowrange I checked my settings and it all looks good. It's gotta be the damn head unit...

Hmmm. Mine reads the texts to me if I'm moving and if I'm stopped will display the text. I've got the JBL head unit and an iPhone 6S with iOS 11.2.5, but it did this with older iOS versions too.

iPhone 7plus here same problem all of the sudden it stopped beeping and displaying texts. Prob about the time of the last iOS update. But my phone isn’t showing the show notifications option on that screen when I’m paired to the truck. Kind of annoying works then doesn’t?

I think I give up with mine (Droid Maxx, KitKat 4.4). MAP is enabled in the bluetooth config for the device. It hasn't alerted/read messages since I got the truck over a year ago. Deleted, re-paired several times. Cleared all messages from the phone, re-paired. Notta.
One day last month out of the blue it alerted to two messages but wouldn't read them. That tells me it works.. sort of..
Other than that it's been mute.
Messages only though, all the phone functions are fine.

    pfffttt.

With an iPhone you have full access to Siri through the Bluetooth connection as well. You can also press and hold (3 seconds) the Call Answer button on the steering wheel and ask Siri to read your texts to you. By doing it this way you get the option to dictate a response through Siri.

Press and Hold the Call Answer button for 3 seconds, it will activate Siri. Wait for the beep then say "Read my last text message." Siri will read it through the car stereo then ask if you would like to respond.

I changed the message settings on my entune to only beep for incoming texts, then I use Siri to read and respond while driving.

With mine I couldn't have any "Favorites" entered. As soon as I removed those mine started allowing my text to be read.

I have never been able to send or receive texts since I bought the truck new in Feb.

When I ask Siri to do it, she says my phone is not setup for it.

I text all day long - out of the truck.
I have it paired - the phone works for calls, but nothing as far as texts.
It’s driving me nuts. I’m about ready to replace the radio unit.

I have an iPhone 8; I previously had an iPhone 6 that this same issue was happening with. Happened in my 16 Tacoma, and now in my 18 Tundra, it gives me the cryptic message that I may have to operate my phone while setup is occurring to get messaging to work. So I gave up. The phone rings through and I guess that's the most important thing. I figured it was an issue with Entune and Apple.
