maybe a dumb question but do our front diffs spin even when 4x isn’t engaged? Asking because I’m planning on regearing and was wondering about break in. If I’m only wheeling around in 2wheel are the front diffs getting broken in too or would that require some 4x action?

Yes they do. It doesn’t require any break in.

Both CVs will spin but the passenger side ADD tube will be unlocked and the transfer case not engaged. The drivers side moving will carry some inertia that the R&P will slightly spin. However I would encourage you to get at least 100 dirt miles in 4x4 in.

And yes, any new R&P will require a break in process if you want the gears to last and not start humming.

Correct. Which really won't break in the gears. The pinion needs to be loaded for it to start wearing the gears in.

I miss the old manual hubs.

Granted it could be a pain at times engaging and disengaging the hubs on a spur of the moment and you had to lock them in every month for a few miles to keep them lubed.

But you could put it in low range without engaging the front hubs for serious pull.

But keeping them engaged all the time just seems wrong.

It's too bad that transfer cases don't have a "front wheel drive only" selection so you could work the front drive parts independently. For those that rarely go off-road and use their 4WD, this would be a convenient option.

I did this in a Chevy I had that threw the rear driveshaft. Hobbled home on the front driveshaft and made it just fine
