Wife has a Lexus is350. Went to one of those rapid oil change places. Discovered a leak about a month later. Brought Lexus in for suspected oil pan or valve cover gasket leak (55k). Tech finds oil drain plug hand tightened, with aftermarket/inferior washer.

They were going to hit me for 165$ but scaled it back to 85$ and fixed the issue, topped off fluids, washed it, and vacuumed inside.

Learned my lesson on both the Lexus and Tundra.

And have you taken that invoice to the lube monkeys for reimbursement?

They should be happy they aren’t buying an engine.

That’s exactly what I would do.

I will be doing my own oil changes until I can no longer perform the task.

I’m sure I can only skim the tip of what you went through. How is the finger?

I seriously considered going over there and raising some hell but the problem is they can retort:

    1. New management/ownership
    2. We tightened it. Another mechanic must have been under your car
    3. That mechanic/tech is no longer with the company
    4. We follow minimum standards for x

That leaves me with, “ You guys are sloppy and I’m never going back.”

Ok. Not much gained from that exchange.

    Kinda my dilemma

All very possible, I get it.

    Also possible:

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’ll get to the bottom of this so it doesn’t happen again, and here’s a refund for your expenses. And my sincere appologies.”

The manager can’t address an issue he/she doesn’t know exists. There is only one way to find out.

That’s true. I’d expect that kind of respected and honest behavior up there. Down here in crazy California, the best you’d get was the thanks for advising them.
I hear ya.. it can’t hurt but this whole economy and legal system is a “catch me if you can” or pursue if you think it’s worth it mentality.
My home town, the owner would have met with me, corrected the mistake with a new oil change, and our families would have met for pizza.

Those days are long gone in the US.

I wouldn’t expect it here either, to be honest. Probably wouldn’t stop me from trying, but sometimes there just ain’t enough time in the day either.

I would bring it up to the shop, politely. Give them a chance to apologize and rectify. As stated, they cannot address things unknown.

-If no luck I would politely write their corporate office and tell them of your experience.

-If rectified write the corporate office and let them know.
