Best Light to Identify Paint Defects?

I just bought my 2018 Tundra a few weeks ago, and it came with a complimentary door ding from the dealership, which they agreed to fix. There were also a few other factory paint defects they agreed to have fixed.

I took my truck to the body shop they use, with the sale manager, and the owner of the body shop said "no problem, should have it back to you in 3 days". They were to push out the door ding, wet sand a high spot on a corner of the hood, sand and repaint a chip in the base coat that had been clear coated over, and buff out a scratch. Friday mid day they told me they'd have it ready at 4:30. They gave it to me 1.5 hours late at 6 pm, and when it was presented to me, it was covered with dust on the inside and spatter of polish on the body and wheels. I couldn't tell if it looked good at all. I was frustrated, and let them know that I brought this truck in looking pristine, and what they were giving me back was laughable. They also failed to reconnect a radar under the front grille and left off a cover for the grille, under the hood.

I took it home and gave it a good wash and detailing, and noticed so many paint defects in what they did, that it would make your head spin. They clear coated 4 panels. There are bubbles in the clear coat, light scratches where none existed before, and areas with no luster to them at all. They did a crappy job! I took it back to the dealership and went over it with the sales manager and we documented all the issues.

The truck is back in the hands of the body shop, and I may get it back today, but I won't count on it based on their inability to keep their timeline last time.

Most of these defects are hard or impossible to see in outdoor lighting. I see them perfectly in my garage with LED and Fluorescent bright white lighting, and pretty well inside the dealership's delivery garage.

So what is the best way in your experience to identify paint defects, since I'd like to know what I'm up against before I even leave the body shop this time.

 

That's BS. I would definitely complain to the dealer and ask for a different shop to fix it

 

Is the color black by chance?

 

Not it's Inferno.

 

If it's not perfect this time, I certainly will. What surprises me is all the 5 star reviews they have online, and how they claim to pride themselves on perfection. Maybe it will be perfect this time, and they just really messed up the first time. We'll see.

 

Bummer about the paint. Best way is with a flourescent light shining at an angle. On Fridays there is a saying that goes, “Can’t see it from my house”. Thats probably what happened.

 

On my black 2016 if you take a LED light around the top of the open door sill by the roof line the paint is so thin you can see the factory primer. The bubbles in the clear coat are from applying the clear coats to quickly.
