Hell yeah it is! I want a locker on my four-wheel-drive. I had a posi on my 2wd dodge and it was amazing the places I could take it just like that.

    Do it!

It will help a lot considering our Tundras' do not have a limited slip diff let alone a locker. Even 2 wheel drives need traction. I've seen 2 wheel drives with a locker go more places sometimes than 4X4's with open diffs.

Cost wise (including re-sale value) I would think it’s better to sell the 2wd and replace with 4wd. Unless you’re going for some specific pre-runner style rig. IMO
I’d guess around $1200 for a locker and $600 labor.
I didn’t shop 2WD’s so don’t know the price difference.
I do know a locked 2wd doesn’t go as far as an unlocked 4wd (90% of the time). I always gave every obstacle a go in 2wd with the rear locked before moving into 4wd. That’s a different wheelbase (4runner) though.

Only downside would be if you didn’t go selectable. I don’t know what’s out there for a Tundra, but I wouldn’t recommend a spool or full time locker on a DD’d rig.
ARB is selectable, so no downsides except cost. And drilling a hole in your housing - but not really a big deal.

Yea, for me $5K vs $2K is a no brainer. I’d move to a 4WD.
But I’m in the PNW hunting slippery hills and random areas where 4wd is a must.
I see OP is in CA, and may use his rig entirely different than I.

Looks like it would be more like $2500 I’d guess. With the ARB I forgot you need the compressor and air line kit. $1800 just in parts, $600 in labor I’d say is on the lean side. More like $800 install.
I had ordered from Just Differentials and they sent out a loaded third member, just sent them my old one back in. It was cheaper and did the labor myself.

I do know a locked 2 wheel can do quite well. My high school buddy back in 1974 had a 2 wheel GMC beater with a spool in the pumpkin. We took that beast all over Roseburg, Orygun area mud rutted logging roads and passed by stuck 4X's on numerous occasions. It's all about traction and some finesse..

Locked in 2WD is a huge difference than open. It all depends on the surface. 2WD locked in the snow/slick will get you absolutely nowhere quick.
It’s usually a hill or slippery surface that will put the locked 2wd under.
Offcamber is where the locked 2WD shines.

If OP runs dunes in CA, it might work great for him.

That's a "bit" north of Roseburg. Tillamook. Rocks. and mud...depending on time of year. Of course you would need a crawler. Different ball game.
