Light white smoke on morning start

got a 2015 CM SR5 that recently purchased with about 76K miles from a dealer. The dealer changed the oil before I took possession.

When the truck is started in the AM it will omit a thin cloud of white smoke for about a second then stops. It seems to do that every morning so far. Our Temps in the AM have been aroud 62-70. Is this a sign of some issues or is this something that can be fixed with oil change with additives? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

Did you get an extended warranty on it? Take some videos of it take back to dealer n show em have em fix

 

Id say possible PCV valve. Do you have a warranty? If so take it in.

 

No warranty on it as they sold it to me AS IS. I have to drive out of town to get it.

 

Is it within 30 days?

Not sure of legalities but sometimes you have 30 days warranty even with as is sales. White smoke could be something else. Keep an eye on your coolant levels. You could have a head gasket leak.

 

Thanks for the link. It sound like this was also loosing oil but with out it being spilled on the floor so im assuming his issues was something else. I will see about replacing the PCV Valvle this weekend, maybe it could be that.

 

What this now.. I dont think i have flex fuel, how would i know. Also, if i do how/what needs to be updated? Thanks @T-Rex266

 

I just wanted to say thank you to @15whtrd and @T-Rex266 . You guys sure know your SH!T! I called the dealer and talked to one of the service advisors who owns a tundra and is an actual Forum member, and he said the same thing. It most likely is a PCV valve and if that doesn't fix it, the ECU upgrade is about $175. Going to pick it up today and try to replace it this weekend.

 

No problem! I’m no expert by any means, but I do a lot of reading around here. There is a write up on how to change that PCV valve around here somewhere I’m sure. It’s just under the intake manifold in the front. If you’re clever should be able to get to it no problem.

 

Just replaced the Valve but testing it it was functional. It would suck in air and pretty much acted like the new one. Also noticed some oil in the hole of the thread of the PCV Valve.




This is the gas cap, does it look like I have Flex fuel? As Tex mentioned something about the ECU update.

 

Negative sir, you do not have ff.

It looks like the smoke was gone the next day but this AM when started it had a very little puff of smoke for less than a second and disappeared. Do you guys think that was the issue and this is the process of it getting cleared out so it will start to completely disappear or am i too hopeful and there is a bigger issue for the engine? I tried to attach a Vid but was not able to due to the format.

 

Did it seem different than before? Give it a few days or maybe even by tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you.

 

Any chance you or the dealer overfilled the oil? Give the dip stick a peek. I did it once (and not by that much) on my old vehicle and it smoked on start until I lowered the level back to normal.

Thank you I think you might be right and time will tell.

I was thinking about the same thing as the dealer who changed the oil was a GMC dealer and probably never worked on foreign trucks. I have contacted my local Toyota dealer to see how much they will charge to change the oil to synthetic and if they could tell what type of oil was used before.

 

You don't really need to call anyone to check the oil level. Just pull out the dip stick, wipe it, put it back in, pull it out, and see where you are at.

 

Lol, yeah I figure that I could handle that’s aspect, I was more referring to the question of the kid of oil used (synthetic or conventional) in the previous or current oil changes.

I've heard good things about Production Offroad in Virginia Beach, but haven't been yet.

 

I was told brown was gas, blue was oil, and white was water/coolant. Had a 1965 Mustang and went through all three, but then I guess I'm old school.

But then again, is it possible this is condensation in the exhaust system from sitting overnight. What does it smell like? That may give you a clue.

 

Would like to see a video of the smoke. Smell will defiantly tell you where to start looking. Sweet smell is antifreeze and everyone knows what burning oil smells like.

 

It turned out that the oil seperator caused it. That was my thread it went from the pcv to the oil seperator. Since then no smoke at start up. Good luck with urs

 

I was able to at least get a little puff of faint smoke this AM but it lasted less than a second and as far as smell, i could not tell any weird sweet or oil burning smell. It was that general combustion smell that comes out of the tailpipes on any car.
