15K Toyota care maintenance service

Read till end so you can get the point why I started my story with 30k service:

I was at the dealer few months ago to do oil change on 25000 miles under Toyota care manufacturer service and I was told I'm late for little over month since per them 24 months expired. So ok I did mistake but definitely always time will go first before I get additional 5K for another oil change.

So since I have toyota care plus with 55K oil change prepaid I was told they will do 30k service even on 25k on odometer.

Well they get me there and I was in rush so I told them go ahead. They did air cabin filter engine filter tire rotation filter and oil change, they used 30k service for this

Today i reached 30k and took it to service for oil change filter change and tire rotation. Service supposed to be 35 to claim from my prepaid Toyota care plan.

I was careful this time and after they completed all got my paperwork and notice they claimed 40k service on ticket.
I said hey WTF are you kidding me are you guys insane, crazy ... Was very frustrating at dealer today Those idiots don't know what they doing seriously.

So I call manager to complain about it and he put not in the system that next service they must use 35k service. I got copy of documents with the note and service manager signature approval for record.

So long short story why I say all above in title, they are completely uneducated people at front where they take order for services.
He made mistake because he was assuring me that they only changing oil at 10k not 5K. I told him to go by manual book to learn more about cars and recommended services.

Also he said yeah see in the system on 15k we did only your maintenance without oil change and filter just tire rotation etc. That's when I realized they did not change oil at all and I drove it 10k without oil change and filter I was very upset and screaming at dealer asking again for manager. Good thing I don't tow or heavy duty work with truck just daily driver mostly empty. Could this skipped oil change be harmful for my Toyota engine? I would appreciate if someone mechanically educated answer question or someone who know a lot about engines.

So they gave me oil change free once my 55k prepaid care plan finish and I can use it for skipped 15k oil change. Basically it's not free it's mine but still upset that engine run 5k with old oil in it.

Please let me know if you would handle this differently and would this mistake harmed my engine.

All I'm going to say is that I'm not surprised. I don't trust any dealer. I've had bad experience with Honda, Chevy and Toyota dealers in the past. Did you happen to look at the oil after driving it for 5K?

 

No I didn't look to be honest and can just image how looked after 10k driving with same oil. Unbelievable...

Reason I post this just for everyone to be aware of dealing with dealer service department and my story.

 

Sorry to hear about your experience. I hate going to the dealership service centers...not to mention I really don't trust other people working on my truck. I know they are technically "Toyota certified" mechanics but they still get paid to do the minimum as quickly as possible to service as many vehicles as possible. With my last truck I had them complete the pre-paid services and then did them all myself. Unfortunately, I don't have a "mechanics" answer for you but I'm curious to see what others say. I just bought a 2018 and noticed on the Toyota Care forms that they only change the oil every 10K. I did notice the trucks are running synthetic now instead of conventional so perhaps that's why?
For what it's worth, the every 5K oil change isn't as common anymore. Most of us do it for peace of mind or because we were used to doing it with older vehicles, or because we put a lot of stress on the truck over the 5K. If you are running full synthetic and don't tow and/or do a lot of city driving, I'm sure you'll be good.

 

Actually 4.6L engine is still 10k and I guess they mixed up but that's not excuse because on manual and 24 months Toyota care card showing 5k synthetic oil change.
I really worry about it.

 

I believe that the first Toyota Care oil change is at 5000 miles.Not sure what interval for subsequent oil changes are.I would not be worried if you went 10,000 on an oil change if they use full synthetic.I will be changing mine at 5000 miles using full synthetic oil regardless of what Toyota recommends.

 

If they put in synthetic, you're probably fine even after running it for 10k

Still, that's why I don't want to bother with Toyota care

 

It's very strange how dealers handles our cars with top paid $$ invoices

 

On 4.6L engine is 10K
On 5.7L engine is 5K
This is all per manual maintenance book and recommended by Toyota

 

i have nothing to back this up... but 10k is way too long for an initial oil change. its why i dont follow the toyota 'prepaid' or 'free' maintenance. its purpose is marketing and its designed to save toyota money.

 

5k for 5.7 flex fuel
10k for 5.7 non flex

I have no idea why, though

 

That's what I was wondering and was confused why. Still upset with dealer that skipped one oil change at 15k for me

yep, and I confirmed with my dealer at the 10k change that this what they are doing. I am not sure why either and neither was service writer. He confirmed that the only differences are in the upper part of the motor so why the different schedule he had no clue. I think it is just a precaution in case you do run E85. I know I won't. No where to buy it around here. In Texas we just feed our corn to the deer and turkeys. I may go with the schedule I did on Tacomas with full syn at 7500 or use the extended life and change every 10 once dealer service runs out.

 

Sorry about everyone having terrible service I gotta say I says my 1st trip to Toyota and it was great Service I took by tundra in for a 5000 Mile Chuck up I told him I had a little shake at 70 mph they rebalance all the tires and rotated them the shake is gone smooth as silk They also change the oil and filter I said I thought you don't change until 10000 miles he goes we change of every 5000 here. Got the truck back clean as a whistle No grease or scratchers anywhere. I gotta Give them a plug Melbourne Toyota

 

Like said above non flex 5.7l is a 10k interval unless you fall into the special conditions like towing and then it's shortened to 5k. Going 10k with synthetic oil you should be fine.

 

Thanks buddy. I have flex but not using E85 so not towing and mostly empty bed. So they stealerships screw up and assumed they should not change oil on 15K so they skipped and I trusted them without seeing invoice Yesterday I found they skipped it and was very upset with them. So basically my truck 5.7 run from 10k to 20k without oil and filter changes.
So then I did oil change at 25k
Then after they did my cam shaft tower seal leak repair with 28,600 i did oil change myself at 28,900 miles..
And now I did at stealership 30K oil change and filter

 

I had grease zerks on all ujoints on Tacoma but I looked on Tundra and did not see any. Did I just miss them?

 

They are there, just greased mine after I changed the oil on Sunday. If you haven't serviced them before they will have black paint on them and they blend in with the driveshaft.

 

I went into grossinger north (lincolnwpod, IL). They never changed my oil on my 5k service. I towed heavily in 100+ degree heat in the Rocky Mountains. They didn’t care.

Anyway, for you, u didn’t tow so I wouldn’t worry. 5k is what they say for our FFV engines, but if you always used regular gas, you’ll be fine.

 

Yet another example of why I do the work on my own vehicles most of the time. You never know what you are going to get when you hand your vehicle over to the dealer for service. Just do your own maintenance - then you know it is done correctly.

Well my truck is FFV and I just use regular gas while mostly not trailer or towing and very empty bed. So what did they say to you? Any credit or bonus?

 

They acted like th y didn’t care. I’d go to northbrook Toyota. They do it every 5k.
