It’s always going to be noticeable. It’ll help, but it’s like using a sharpie to fix an imperfection in black.

Won't be perfect but use some MGM touch up paint. Should be good enough to make you forget about it until one of us sees your truck and says," Hey, that's where you touched up that rock chip." Haha.

Seriously, we have some very good detailing guys here that may have a better fix short of repainting the whole hood.!

Best bet is touch up paint. Build up the paint in layers (leave plenty of drying time between coats) to get it thick as the other paint. It'll look good. Also you may be able to get clear coat touch up to finish it off

The dealership will sell you the base color (mgm) and then the top coat which is the clear coat. It's decent stuff out of all the touch up paint I've used it's one of my favorite bottles to use. I've got a black truck and some of the spots I've touched up are hardly noticeable, except the 2 on my hood everyone asks what happened there lol.

I got pretty lucky with touch up paint on my last vehicle. It had a pretty good chip on the top of the hood. I filled it with a few layers of paint. Then built up more layers of clear coat, then wet sanded it flat. It was noticeable but looked really well done for what it was. From certain angles you couldn’t even see it.

What grit sandpaper did you use for the wet sanding?

I do touchup and mobile paint repair for a living. The first thing I always tell my clients is "touchup fixes color, not texture". It's best described as putting flesh colored peroxide on a wound. It's simple to put paint in a rock chip. Trying to match the depth of ? coats of primer, ? coats of paint, and ? coats of clear and level it out is the hard part. Unless you treat it as a paint repair by sanding and painting it, you will notice it. IMO Touchup will always max out as "better than nothing". It is certainly cheaper than re-spraying the panel.

I have a couple spots on my truck that I touched up with paint from my dealer. I did not wet sand, just applied a couple layers until it filled in, cant notice it unless you look for it.

Firstly, DO NOT color sand after touching up; it’s too easy to burn through the clear coat. I found a product a few years ago (body and paint forum) that is safe to use, and the results are fantastic. That product is Langka Blob Eliminator https://www.amazon.com/Langka-LANGK...467005&sr=8-1&keywords=langka+blob+eliminator

First fill the chip area with factory touch up; may take several coats. Don’t worry about the buildup, or blob. Follow the instructions provided with the Langka product, and you will watch the blob flatten just as though you are sanding. You can literally level and smooth the touch up without causing any damage to your base coat or clear coat. I’ve used this on white pearl tri coat paint and you cannot see the chip areas. Great product. It only works with OEM (factory) touch up paint.
