Sound matting worth it?

What areas of the doors did you apply it to? My plan was behind speakers on outter skin and a little bit on the inner skin for rattles.

I'll then apply CCF and MLV over that inner skin of the door, and I'm starting to think some Relfectix to the inside of the door panels for heat purposes.

 

Where did you purchase the competition bulk ballistic from?
I have had a hard time finding it online.

 

I placed a small square behind each of the speaker magnets inside the door & all over the metal behind the door panel. On the back glass panel, I took the insulated mat down and stuck it to the entire metal cover. The bulk kit was just enough. Not a whole lot of room for error. This stuff is good though and can’t really mess up if you take your time.

 

I did some searching on the interweb, but think I found my best deal on ebay.

 

I am early in my system install and so far have only done the 25% rule using sound deadening showdown tiles on rear wall outer skin (closest to bed) then wrapped the metal access panel to rear window and the surrounding inner rear wall in Soundskin Pro then reinstalled the PVC liner and today when I went to open the rear window I had to look in the rearview mirror to see if it had gone down because it was so quiet....pics to come later when I finish my build...

 

Hey guys i was looking at the noico 80 mil, wich appears to be the best bang for your buck. Jad pretty good reviews, anyone have any experience with it? Is it a good choice?

 

I have some i still haven't installed. A few guys here have used it and have good reviews, which is why I got Noico as well

 

Cool, can’t wait to see your results. Im very i terested in the same project. So far i replaced the door speakers non JBL and installed some dynamat extreme. Its ok but im so disappointed in how much exterior noise in these trucks

 

Noico or any CDL material doesn't really help with ambient noise, its mostly for vibration. Look into mass loaded vinyl and other types of sound proofing. I suggest googling sound deadener showdown, some great ideas there

 

I'm pretty damn happy with how much ambient noise reduction I got out of the Soundskins I did it in the doors and rear wall. I installed it more for sound system improvement but today was the first day since I installed it that I took a road trip with the fam (aka music at level 5 max) and even my wife who never rides in my truck noticed how much quieter it was. That said, if you really want to quiet the cabin I also recommend the sound deadening showdown method and you should check out his website, it isn't though I will say that.

 

Thanks, im interested in both ambient noise reduction and better sound quality as i do plan to ad a couple of subs. Nothing to crazy but hoping to do it all at once.

 

That Soundskins stuff knocks out 2 steps in one so I chose it just from a time saving standpoint. I was very close to doing the raammat though which wouldve been cheaper but the extra steps to install steered me away. Once I get my last door matted and speaker installed and then put in my new head unit I will post a build thread with pics and thoughts

 

I wish I had known more about Soundskin before I bought all my stuff would have saved me time and aggravation I'm sure

 

Got my drivers door done today. Took about 2 hours.
CLD in a few places and behind speaker (pic doesn't everywhere I used it. I put it on inner and outer skins of the door.
Then cut the closed cell foam to fit. Used that as a template for the MLV. Spray adhesive to bond them together. Used Velcro attached to MLV with a hole cut in foam to attach it. It holds strong and perfectly.
The door feels and sounds so solid now and there are no vibrations whatsoever.
Took a good bit of fine tuning and trimming to get the door panels back on, its a tight fit now.

 

@Pudge I can't remember, are you not replacing the speakers?

 

i'm pretty happy with the soundskins in my truck. did the inside/outside of the doors, rear wall and floor. i have 3 tubes left that will eventually go on the roof but, to do that, i have to get super motivated to pull the cap and the headliner. i also put some of the soundskins rings around the door speakers.

i see you did the bottom of the outer skin but, did you add a strip to the middle section? there's another section in there, in between the two cross braces.

 

No plans to do speakers at this time. I don't have the budget for an amp and dsp to make this stupid JBL system work right. I doubt just doing speakers and leaving everything else stock is worth it?
My hope is some improvement with the sound deadening I'm doing.

 

I got some on the upper section above the brace, what you see in the pic is the middle section between the brace and some kind of round pipe brace. I did not do any below the round pipe at the bottom of the door.

 

That lower section was a PIA to do...

 

It looked like it would be, so I skipped it. I think I for enough on to cut down on vibration and rattles. Time will tell I supposed

Soem day when i finally get all the doors, floor and back wall done, is like to do my roof with something. Drove home in a nasty rain storm yesterday and noticed how loud it really is.

 

that's alright. everyone gets a couple of free fat finger moments...

i actually wound up with 10 rolls. i used 4 on the doors then another 3 for the rear wall and floor. a lot of the scraps from the doors got used to fill in the small areas on the rear wall and around the trans tunnel. the soundskin was super easy to work with until it got hot then, it just got all over everything.

 

So is soudskin supposed to have the same ambient noise reduction as the three step process wilth mlv? If so how well did it work and how much$?

 

I believe Soundskin is a combo of closed cell foam and butyl and foil. I do not believe it contains mass loaded vinyl which is what really is supposed to kill ambient sound

 

james, over at tech12volts, has kits. you can also get it by the roll at abt. you'll need one roll per door. i used another 3 to cover the rear wall and floor up to the pedals. the rings i had to order direct from soundskins. took forever to get here.

this. however, there is a significant reduction in road noise. not sure how it would to compare to what pudge has done with the mlv. i'm sure once i do the roof it will be even better.

 

I suspect MLV does a better job just based on what it is but I was very satisfied with the reduction of ambient noise with the soundskins

 

I wish I had done more research and gotten the Soundskin. I'm in too deep with what I have to look back so I'm going to plug away one area at a time. I suspect that the back wall and floor is where I'll find the greatest improvement ?

 

Cool, thanks for the info guys. I guess il have to compare cost and ease of install. I get vibration noise around the inner door handle/latch with loud music even after the dynamat. Do u guys have this problem after your installs?
