Went to the neurologist today. Was told that the numbness is not typical of the dissection but most likely I had a small stroke that was not detected with the MRI. Nothing to worry about, no change to how I would be treated if I did or if I didn’t. Numbness is most likely temporary and I should start seeing improvement soon. The neck pain and headache on the opposite side of my neck is not typical of the dissection and most likely something separate. Will be working with a massage therapist that happens to also be a physical therapist to figure it out. 325mg Asprin once a day is adequate for blood clot prevention. Have a follow up mid May and will schedule another cat scan in 3 months to see if it is healed.

Brian, I’m hoping I’m over-analyzing but have a question for you because I’ve “normally” had issues with this exact area, including severe and crippling headaches that are only relieved by the chiro. Have you ever had ongoing stress to those muscles or nerves in that region? Originally posted you referred to gym or chiro as a leading idea of where is “injury” might have come from. Are you still leaning in that direction?? I know it’s still a mystery but sometimes we can self diagnose because of the obvious sensations, and it sounds like you’re already doing such. Your experience has me nervous due to my ongoing stressed muscles and headaches.

    I’m hoping the best brother!

EDIT*. I must’ve missed a post earlier about the mini stroke. Just read it after I wrote this. After all the horror stories and Dr mishaps I’ve read through here I have to inquire about your confidence. Does the prognosis sound like it’s legit? I’m not discounting it, just asking you, the one that’s experiencing the sensations

Most likely cause is chiropractor. I have not had any other neck trauma besides that. Its the fast neck cracking that is the typical cause.
Just working out and lifting heavy weight would not have caused this artery tear. Could have made it worse but not initial cause.
I have been working out a lot and building muscle while loosing fat. I have felt alot of pressure on my traps over the past 6 months or so. Have had this same neck/head pain back last august/November. I lost taste. Everything tasted bitter. Neurologist doesnt think that is related to the dissection. Im thinking i did something else that is affecting my traps. Massage was able to help the pain last time. Taste took about a month to come back.

Not going back to the chiropractor.

Yea seems like inflammation to nerves that might need some help to calm down. Since I’m at 2 weeks now without it going away I may need a shot or so to get rid of it. Possibly also caused by the chiropractor.
Still had the artery dissection and possible mild stoke. Just another thing wrong at the moment.

Going to send a message to neurologist and probably set up appointment with primary to see what can be done. I would feel so much better if my head didn’t hurt all the time.

I wasn’t for 4 days after the hospital visit but am now. No issues laying down. Some nights I have to take ibuprophin to calm it down first

I used to work in pain management, if it's indeed neuralgia, consistent anti-inflammatory medication should clear it up in a couple of months. It's a gradual process over time and is used in combo with acute pain relievers, that's why you have to take them every day as prescribed, and it won't be something you take forever.

Go at it from different angles... heat, massage, physio, acupuncture and if first line drugs don’t help, you can progress to meds used for epilepsy and depression in dosage/frequencies designed for nerve pain. At one-time they were off label uses but it's now established, supported by peer-reviewed studies.

Of course I’m a webchair here so always consult a professional in-person and maintain a relationship because managing pain is trial and error, we all respond differently. Follow-up is important to modify the regimen specific to your needs and eventually wean you off them.

Good luck man, you got this!

Thanks for the info. I have had to take ibuprofen every day for 2 weeks now to keep the pain down. Definitely worried when i have to take that many meds.

No problem, your specialist would have gotten baseline liver/kidney function and other bloodwork results, then repeat them at intervals if any of your meds may affect your organs. At minimum, never exceed what's on the bottle, and be honest with your doc how much you are taking OTC, holistically, or anything they might not be aware about.

Ibuprofen will be fine for acute relief, but I don't believe it's the type of anti-inflammatory that will settle those nerves in the long run (if that's the cause). Again, my opinion means squat over the net. I just have a good feeling with everything I've read you're going to be okay managed correctly by your health care professionals, keep positive Brian!
