I need to get something to help the wife and kids get into the Tundra. I was going to get some steps/nefbars, but I like sliders better. I like the idea of bolting to the frame instead of the body and they are more durable.

I will not be offroading my Tundra so I don't need something super stout. I am looking for something that has a fill plate, flat and can bolt on. I like the All-Pro Apex sliders but they are angled up. Then I looked at Slee, but they don't work with the larger gas tank.

I was going to order the white knuckle, but the idea of drilling 10 holes in the frame concerns me as I live in the northeast. The Trundra will get a generous salt bath each winter and I am concerned about frame rust.

Any suggestions as to what other ones I should look at?

Sub'd cuz I have a similar situation. I hate steps but don't "plan" on offroading to the point where I'l need sliders. Sliders definitely look better, IMO.

Demello are better "steps" than SDHQ and may be bolted or welded on. Still not actual "steps" though. The "problem" with sliders in this application is that they fit close to the truck. The same reason they offer frame protection and look good is why they are not good steps.

Every slider I’ve ever stepped on works perfectly as a step. And I think I’ve stepped on every single brand now. Even without the fill plates they’re fine. Just might need a little skateboard tape or something on round tubes when it gets wet.

For steps I really like the Amp Research retractable type. That’s what I would get if I only needed steps.
I personally have White Knuckle sliders because i do quite a bit of off roading. They are great dual purpose body panel protection and steps. I just put a little skate board grip tape on them where you step to get in. My 5’2” wife and 12 year old daughter have no issues using them as steps.

I meant that, sliders being mounted close to the truck, it doesn't decrease the "step-up" distance for kids, as much as purpose-built steps.

No worries; I don't mind even if it was. Your comment made me realize I hadn't gotten what I wanted to, across.

Btw, I've put off installing the steps I got for so long, my family have stopped mentioning it. My son uses his knee when necessary to crawl in....

Look on your local Craigslist for guys that can fab for you. There's a guy here that'll do whatever I want for 500 bucks. Just waiting on a few other things I want to get done first

@Mark843 Have you looked at the N-Fab RKR steps? From what I can tell, they're a slider with a detachable step. No idea how durable they are as I don't see many people running them.

While they look to be one of the sturdiest steps out there they are not sliders.

For a slider you definitely want it only bolted to the frame. Although I was under the impression that steps also only bolt to the frame. I would think the sheet metal would crumble.

I am heavily leaning toward the SDHQ sliders. Does anyone have a picture from front to back, or back to front showing how much angle there is to them? Pictures can be very deceptive depending on how they are taken. Does anyone have them on a stock height truck and are willing to give me measurements from the ground to the top of the outside tube?

I have these. They sit high and tight but do not mount to the frame. They mount using the existing holes for the factory side steps. They are beefy for what they are but no sdhq sliders.

For light to medium hits they get you buy. Not bad for the money especially if you get em on sale. Good budget option.

If I could do it over again I think I’d go with the sdhqs due to the fact that I actually use my truck off road

@itsdchz Thank you for the pics. I sent the pics to my wife for approval to see if she thinks the step height would work.

The height on sliders is a non-factor unless maybe you're on a 7" lift or something.

I went with the new P&P design. Have been happy so far. Were pretty easy to mount, seem rock solid and like how they're angled at front and back to match body shape.

Are the SDHQ sliders the only sliders that require no holes to be drilled?

If you use them as sliders then probably. BudBuilt's may be 100% bolt on also, but are much heavier then SDHQ sliders. Others like ALL-Pro and others can be used as steps without drilling, but not to to their full potential without doing the drilling.

How long before you actually got the sliders after ordering? I like P&P’s sliders but I hear it takes too long for shipping or production one of them.

I have the SDHQ sliders as well and they work great as a step. Added some grip tape for wet weather and haven’t had any issues.

Took about 2 months from order to delivery, though that did include Christmas and New Years. Not in stock or super quick, but luckily I wasn't in a huge rush either.

Any issues with the SDHQ front mount being where the cab attaches? I don't plan on offloading so probably a non issues for me, but if you cam down hard on them, could them bend the cab mount where they attach to in the front?
