Not to bash on Trail Gear, but holy shit check out the differences in these shackles.
Trail Gear 3/4" Shackle WLL = 4.75T____5:1 Design Factor
CM 3/4" Super Carbon Shackle WLL = 6.5T_____6:1 Design Factor

That is over a 15 Ton difference in breaking strength.

I was amazed at the difference. If it can stop one person from getting killed (or hurt) from a broken shackle that would be awesome.

Just checked the one I have in my truck. It’s a Crosby USA made. Looks like I should maybe get one with a higher working load limit.

Crosby is a good brand, the CM shackle that I show in the video is a Super Carbon Alloy, compared to the standard Carbon Alloy like the one you showed a picture of.

Anywhere that carries Columbus McKinnon shackles should have them. I got mine from Fasteners but Fastenal would probably have some too.

This ones worse. It says unbreakable 41,850lbs. But it’s stamped 4.75 tons on the shackle, just like all the other cheap ones they sell for $13. This is going to get someone killed one day.

What's the deal with soft shackles? :notsure:
I'm sure like everything else there are good ones and bad ones. What should we be looking for? Are there go to brands/models?

I am assuming "soft" means an alloy of steel that has a ductile failure mode. Basically in non-engineering terms, the steel will bend before it breaks. This is always preferred over a brittle failure, which basically means it will just snap and release all the load all at once.

Always check the stamped rating on your shackles, if they aren't stamped throw them in the trash. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has requirements for rigging hardware and marking and labeling is one of the requirements. They should have the rated load, manufacturer, and size at a minimum. If you want some light reading on rigging hardware pick up a copy of ASME B30.26. Depending on wether or not your shackles were designed following ASME they should be designed with a factor of 5 and tested to a factor of 2 but for your own good use one with a rating 2-3 times the load you plan to put on it.

I didn't stay at a holiday inn express last night but I do have a mechanical engineering degree.

oooooo DUH. Sorry, the engineer in me thinks differently. Shackles and rigging hardware are something I deal with frequently at work lifting very expensive one of a kind things.

I pretend to be a mechanical engineer at work sometimes when one of the real ones isn't around, but I was asking about what Joon posted.

I bought this kit. I thought it looked good.

Is it garbage? They have WLL 43/4T stamped on them.

I'm all for safety, which is why I'm trying to figure out exactly what the issue is here.

4.75 tons is 9,500lbs - 2000lb more than gwvr for a Tundra. And that's the working load limit. The breaking strength at a factor of 5 is 47,500lbs. That's more than the "capacity" or "breaking strength" of most recovery straps and soft shackles. If the shackle is attached to a receiver, the hitch pin for that receiver is only good to 22-31,000 lbs based on what I've read. It seems like the shackle would be the last thing to fail.

What am I missing? Trying to understand before I go shell out for a really expensive shackle.

edit: Realized there might be a difference between using this as a rear recovery point and attaching a winch hook to it?

Shackle ratings is a genuine issue. There was a recent OSHA investigation that found many are not actually capable of the rating they claim and someone got hurt. At my work we were required to dispose of all non USA made shackles and only use US made with ratings cast/stamped into the loop. Forces can multiply rapidly depending on shock loads and if pulleys are involved so be safe and use good quality parts.

Also real world shackle strength is dependent on the gap between the lug plate and the shackle- grip minus plate thickness. So depending on geometry how they are loaded.....

I’d be more comfortable with Crosby than eBay....

In the work I do we rig and lift a lot. We only use Crosby shackles. They use good steel and manufacturing process and they test what they make. I also have only Crosby equipment in my recovery bag.
That said, a 3/4 in shackle is rated to 4-3/4 tons as the WLL for over head lifting. Your recovery hardware WLL should exceed your winch’s rating. A 3/4in shackle is correct for up to a 9000lb winch in a single line pull. Go bigger if you think you may be using a double line pull.
The shock loading that occurs when trying to ‘tug’ someone out of the mud is a very different thing. People do it all the time but I never will. And when I do help recover someone I only use my equipment. There are way too many crap shackles sold on the off-road websites and catalogs and Amazon. You get what you pay for.

In a perfect world, winch recovery would be straight forward and easy(ish).

Buy good equipment, inspect before each use, and discard when damaged.

Three weeks ago I bent a shackle.
