    Fellow Tundra Owners,

I am in the middle of a Bilstein 5100 install. I have removed the pin and loosened the castle nut but I cannot get the stupid tie rod end to break free? Any tips or tricks?

BFH! Don’t hit the joint itself if you can help it. Hit the side of it. Loosen but don’t remove the nut. In the past on an old truck I was working on I grabbed two nuts with the same thread as the castle nuts and threaded them on. That way I could hit the top of the joint without damaging the threads. I have not done it on the Tundra yet. Be wary of hitting that part though. Sorry I’m not more help.

If it’s giving you a lot of problems you should be able to rent a ball joint separator removal tool at the auto parts store. It’s got two fingers that go underneath the joint and then a screw that pushes down on the top of the ball joint threads

I got the driver. BFH it is. I was afraid to hit too hard and break something. I ended up using a 2x4 and finally got it free. Thanks for the help!

Get a harbor freight 20% coupon and get this I rented a similar tool from autozone, but theirs was too small. The harbor freight one was perfect.

Why are you removing the tre? I just did mine last week and didn’t remove the tie rod end, just the two 22mm on the bottom

Thanks everybody for the quick responses.

Unfortunately, I could not get the install instructions downloaded off Toytec's website. I went to Youtube and all the forum vendors but not all of the instructions were identical. Some had you remove the TRE some did not. Some had you drop the LCA, some did not. I panicked lol

Just loosen the alignment cam bolts, and take out the two large bolts next to the lower Ball joint, then take off the four top hat bolts, and viola! Strut comes out

Thats exactly what I did on the passenger side. Not too sure if that was in the instructions because it gives EXTRA space to pull the strut out? But I learned my lesson.

Did you use a compressor? Or did you use the floor jack on the lca method?

Floorjack on LCA. Seemed to go in with little struggle. I ended up installing 5100s with Toytec 1/4 spacer on top. Approx 2" which means it didnt take much to get everything to fall in place.
