Mine has just started to seep in that same area, passenger side in the rear near the tab. I to am hoping maybe a little weeping and nothing else. I know members have had it repaired and all is well, but this is going to highly depend on who's working on the truck. Just not going to be the same once it's cracked open and put back together.

Hit it with some simple green and spray it off. Clean it up and then monitor it.

My 2010 was fairly dirty around the wheel wells, fender skirts, and sides of the motor when I bought it. Initially I was convinced I had a cam tower seal leak since the area was so dirty and grimey. I soaked it all with engine degreaser, washed it, then simple green, washed again. Over 3k since I cleaned it up and not a drop of anything that looks like oil.

That's what mine looks like as well and in the same spot. What's crazy is it looks like there's a good bead FIPG there already. I'm wondering if this ow20 oil is part of the issue, I wonder if the early 5.7 Tundra's ran 5w30.

I spoke with another local dealer this afternoon and will be taking in in Thursday for a second opinion. The service manager at that dealership knew exactly what I was talking about and informed me they have done dozens mostly 2013-14 and one 2017 so far and said that is what it sounds like. He also said it can be a hastle getting reimbursed by Toyota for this warranty work so some dealers kinda ignore it until it becomes a major fire hazard and they have to deal with it. He also said the cause can be related to the fact that the machined surfaces weren’t cleaned properly, still having residual oil on them upon assembly at the factory therefore leading to a not so good seal. If this is in fact the problem which I will find out on Thursday he did say they haven’t had any come back and customers have been pleased.... We will see and I will post the diagnosis, maybe it’s just a defective valve cover seal..staying positive...

Yep, looks wet to my eyes. I even sounds like the dealer you're talking with might be trustworthy...the service manager anyway.

In my research it appears that this problem only plagues the 5.7L. I haven't found anything on the 4.6L however folks are mostly only posting the year and mileage of their Tundras. Anyone having the problem with the 4.6's?

Not raining today so I was able to crawl under my truck today and assess, I'm gonna have to make an appt And get mine to the dealer. It's leaking pretty good, crossmember is covered with oil and grime and it's dripping down the manifold heat shields.

    What a bummer...20180214_155412.jpg 20180214_155359.jpg

Look at the picture above your post, see where the black sealant is? That's the area you need to focus on.

I will find out tomorrow on mine but was wondering what mileage you all are at when you had yours fixed or are seeing the leak? I am only at 8400 miles!! Has anyone been successful getting an extended warranty due to this obvious defect?? I will update tomorrow once I have the second dealer look at it...

I did my last oil change at 15k in August and the leak wasn't there, I'm at 21k now and the leak is there. I noticed it this weekend while rotating my tires, so my leak came on pretty quickly. I have been wanting some 2018 headlights maybe I will just trade the truck in, let someone else deal with it.

30 years of working on Jap cars......if that seal is leaking, especially at low miles, then there is something wrong to the point it should be a recall. Not common on Jap engines. So make sure your valve cover gasket isn't leaking. This so commonly mistaken for a cam seal leak. When I worked out at Phoenix engines, in order to keep your engine warrantied, you had to come back to the shop for the first several oil changes, and part of the service was to torque all oil pans, that meaning valve covers.

at this point I think Toyota is aware of it and keeping it low profile. A recall would be way too expensive for them. I think they are waiting on the trucks affected to roll in at the dealership and they fix them under warranty to keep owners happy. I don't think I read anyone had to pay on its own pocket. This is definitely something that shows up before the 5 years/60,000 miles warranty is over. My 0.02

I have an appointment to get mine looked at on Sat (2015 with 49k on it). I've been smelling a little bit of a burnt oil smell on the driver side especially if my truck sits for a couple days. Want to definitely get it taken care of before the powertrain warranty is up. Hopefully they don't try and give me the run around.

I agree, I also think is at this point it has not been solved at the production level that it must be a design flaw. Pretty sad that this is still going on and owners have to deal with it. Yes its usually covered under warranty but having your engine tore down like this doesn't leave you with the best feeling, there's a lot of room for error or contamination into the engine. I love this truck and its been great so far but I will take the little things breaking like on my previous truck (Silverado) vs major engine work..cmon Toyota.

I had to pay some out of pocket. They did lower the price but it was not free. I have a 2010 with 67000 miles on it.

yes that sucks. Make sure to keep the receipts in case they issue a recall or extend warranty later on.

Yep. It leaked from new, and was not driveable at 3k. Started seeping again at 9k, so had to go. My 09 seeped, but never enough to repair, it is not considered abnormal to seep oil(rare for Toyota though, usually tight). My 2018 is leaking from the rear main now...

My take, I have looked under every Tundra I could over the past few years, probably 150+. Half had seepage or leaks. Everything about using that type of seal there has to be perfect, clean, flat, placement and size of FIPG, even has a time limit between sealant application and tower install. It is worth examining thoroughly before warranty expiration, it’s $$$.
