I just installed an 1/8 steel powdercoated skid I bought on Amazon for $250 shipped. Covers the front and engine oil pan. Should be able to take a few solid hits. Much better than stock. Part Number 57086BMX5. It's the skid plate package that Pro Comp includes with their long travel kit.20180324_090823.jpg IMG_20180324_094916_134.jpg 20180324_090804.jpg

    Pros:
    - cost
    - sturdy
    - easy install
    - fast shipping
    - coverage
    - good looks

    Cons:
    - no instructions included
    - unknown country of origin, though I suspect Chula Vista
    - no oil filter access door

I see a battery of RCI skid plates available, such as front A-arms, engine skid, transmission/transfer case, rear diff, etc. I'm thinking of getting these for protection from salt spray and possibly aerodynamic improvements. Any thoughts if this is worthwhile/good logic?

I have the RCI on mine, swapped out the OEM basic one that came with the off-road package. I would say the side to side coverage is better with OEM, RCI protect further back, so if you are looking strictly for road spray, may want to opt for OEM. RCI is much much tougher though for actually hitting anything. Aerodynamics, I don't have a wind tunnel, but I'd say our trucks are about as efficient as driving a lego brick down the road, so I am thinking skid won't do much to improve aerodynamics.

I have my truck down in the outer banks quite a bit, so my plan so far for keeping rust away from salt spray off the ocean is to give any bare metal a good coating of fluid film, and reapply periodically

I was beginning to wonder if the weight penalty of adding a bunch of steel skidplates was going to offset any aero gains anyway.

I'll be using fluid film for next season, the shop told me they wouldn't apply it, even to a brand new truck, when there's already been salt on the road...

Ive had rci aluminum plates on my fj for a few years now, love them, will be going with rci for the tundra, they usually have a tax return sale. Super easy to install.

Went with Bud as they are just north of my location. Got the skid and then the next piece back. Very helpful on the phone and install was perfect. Added ADD front bumper and it looks like the skid and bumper were made together. Also, no logo cut into the skid which is my preference.

Sorry for the necro-bump. Where's the best place to buy the REI front skid plate? Looking to get rid of the POS factory one. Mainly for oil change purposes and not for wheeling (I own the Tundra as a boat hauler).

Yes, sorry I meant RCI. I can't stand the factory skid plate when changing the oil and to top it off: either half the bolts rattled out while driving or the stealership service dept. just didn't re-install them. I am basically looking for the cheapest skid plate with an oil change door if anyone has any other recommendations.
