Dual Battery Setups

Hey folks -

My company owns 4 2105 Tundras and have 3 more on the way. We'll be adding a few extras to upfit them for the work they do. Our customer has asked for the 3 new ones to have a dual battery setup in addition to a few other things. (It should be noted that the other 4 already have dual battery setups but the customer's upfitting shop did custom installs).

Looking for a kit that I don't have to piece together that's good quality. Haven't dealt with purchasing or installing one before so wanted to get some opinions from you all.

And for eye candy, one of our current 4 Tundras.

 

Did you ever figure this out or find a better place to mount a 2nd battery?

Someone needs to seriously make a tray for a second battery in the engine bay for these trucks. Who has a 3D printer?

 

The only spot in the engine bay would be where the windshield wiper and power steering fluid containers are.. so a kit would need to relocate those, too.

 

If it were me I would have a box added under the bed near the rear axle clear of obstruction. My GMC had a 2ndary battery box mount under the hood. I wish Toyota did this.

 

Yea, that's what I'd prefer to do, too, since it helps -- albeit very slightly -- keep the center of gravity low(er) but I'd need it to be waterproof.

Wanted to bump this. Any one have a dual battery setup? Would like to start working on this

 

haven't started on mine yet. trying to figure out a decent location. not too excited about putting it under the truck. maybe in the bed but i have some doodling to do. either way, i'll be using the ibs controller.

 

Laat dual battery setup on a tundra I saw was two Optimas stacked sideways on each other in the factory battery holding area

 

Thinking about doing the same to run a inverter if needed. Was think of isolating two batters in my tool box in the bed. have the room for it all but not sure if the stock alternator will keep up with everything. To much research to do along with to many mod's to figure out and not nearly enough time or money.

you'll probably want to avoid the inverter. puts more strain on the system than it's worth. once i get mine figured out, i'll share all the info.

 

I have two of the leitner gear pods and was considering one in there but, I’m going to have a shop look at the truck and see if they can think of a better spot.

I'm writing up our dual battery install in our build thread now. Should have it posted by EOD today. We've been running a LiPo dual battery for a little over a year. I also know that @papasmurf @osidepunker @n2deep @roypark @dragos28 @zackbremer are all running duals.

Kevin our setup with the Lipo is a little different because the batteries are small and only 13lbs so easy to stuff in smaller spots. Mine is located behind the rear seats in my DC.

 

As does @ColoradoTJ, who is a knowledgeable guy.

Agreed - the LiPo is the way to go in my opinion after running it for a year. The convenience is amazing.

My dual bat set up is deff not a commercial setup, all custom.

But for argument sake here are some pics... oh and the second bat is in a bat box under the bed.

I had dual batteries in my Tacoma before I sold it. I’m pretty sure the kit was by “Painless”

 

Dual battery systems are nice but they aren't always needed. If you're just running a fridge and a few accesories, as long as you drive every other day you will have no problem. Just get a single 27f agm battery and carry a jump pack for insurance. 100 or 200 watts of solar wouldn't be a bad idea in this case. Worry free.

If I were to camp in the same spot without driving for a few days I'd definitely go duals plus solar plus jump pack.

Just wanted to throw that out there for those wanting to start running a fridge.
