Hey guys. I have a 1st Gen. 2001 Tundra. Access cab, limited, 4.7 v8, trd. I got roughly 310,xxx miles. Major fixes are the coil packs, LCA bushings, shocks and struts, and tie end rods. I need to fix my rack and pinion next. It's becoming worn out. I've took it to a few places to get a quote on fixing it. Their quote was $1000 . I found one for 300. But how hard is it to do and what tools would I need to do it myself?

It's not hard, but does take time. You'll need something to pop the outer tie rod ends out (BJ separator, tie rod removal too, etc.), and a handful of sockets. The FSM calls for a SST (09023−12701) to remove the pressure & return lines, but can be done with a flair nut wrench if you are clever. The center bolt holding the rack on is a bitch because the bolt is above the rack/crossmember. My suggestion is to leave the steering wheel dead nuts centered before disassemble and make sure the gear assembly stud thingy is centered as well so when you put the intermediate shaft back on the rack gear is perfectly centered.
