I should have ordered 2. I'm going to do it on my current compressor and will probably want to do it when I upgrade to the 400 or 440.

I’m gonna wait til Matt uses it at least 5 times to make sure his compressor doesn’t blow up or something. ;)

Never understood why installing in the engine bay is the best location asides from its close proximity to the power source. Wouldnt the heat & dust/ dirt drastically affect the compressor's performance & durability?

Good question. I don't know but I think since it is close to the power source is good reasoning. I have seen people mount them under the rear of the truck. Seems like it would get dirty there too from rain, dirt, snow etc. Also you have to get down low to see the hook-up location turn on etc. But I like under the seat location as an option even though it would take away from the ESP storage options, something I do not have but looking into. This is a good post: https://www.tundras.com/threads/new...v-soon-to-be-released.8869/page-3#post-452317

Side note, the Tacoma has a cutout in the bed, has anyone looked into cutting their bed to have a small cubby and install the air compressor there?

Like @ccdawnpatrol stated. It’s the best location. Some have put it in their bed but you have to jump in there for each use. Inside the cab and it will be noisy and you have to keep a door open to use it. If you want inside the cab look into that nsv. Only thing I don’t like with it is it’s specs are pretty low for how much they charge. It’s nice though. I think for Me it’s either portable lie I have now or hardwired under the hood.

Under the hood keeps it away from the elements. When and what would you use the compressor for?
    Air horns
    Lockers
    Air bags
    Tires
Utilities/ air mattress etc. when camping.
For the first 3, you'd need to run an air hose out of the cab. That's a pretty big hole but possible. Most areas you'd be routing the hose through 2 walls from what I've seen while running wires.
For the last 2 you've gotta have the door open. Rain and it's coming in the cab. With the addition of a pressure switch you can sit in the cab while airing up something outside. You're really not losing any storage putting it under the hood and, as mentioned, you're closer to the electrical source and well as air horns or front a locker.
As far as under the truck, for me that means it'll be under water sooner of later.
Those are my reasons for mounting under the hood.

    Boom, nailed it.

This was the post I was referring to regarding putting it in the bed of the truck. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/closed-arb-compressors-2-0-group-buy.515197/

Obviously the Tundra does not have cutouts for this but have you heard/seen anyone who has done this before? The Tacoma already has them and this is just a mount to make it sit secure in that bed. But there in lies the problem of having it be super far away form the battery, unless you can hook it up to another power source back there. (something I obviously have no clue if is available and would work) Also I bet this would be loud since there's nothing else surrounding it, might require some sound deadening material to help.

I’ve never had a permanent mount compressor. Have seen lots of custom rigs with em and I like admiring the installs. I’ve probably had at least 8 portable compressors, a couple were threaded into the spark plug hole to use the engine. I’m content to get it out of my toolbox when it’s needed and it’s always clean and safe. Two were set up to use plugs upfront that also would connect jumper cables without lifting the hood. @BlueBottle has an idea that suits me just fine, using the rear trailer plug!

So what’s your fav portable unit to date? I’m wondering if the 400p was a good deal overall. Some cost more some less. So hard to buy stuff.

Thanks, ordered mine earlier, cant wait. I think this is the most convenient and logical for my needs. I can go riding with my buddys, and i can just bring it with me and use there hitch if I ever need to use it , cause sometime i just put my bike in there trailer if there is room. Thanks again.

That's a slick set up. I would think it'd be pretty easy to mod into a Tundra. Once you've cut through the inner bed wall you'd have easy access for wires and a hose. You've gotta run fairly big wires as the ARB has a 40 amp fuse.
There sure are some advantages to portable unit and @BlueBottle 's plug is slick! I've never heard of one that works off an engine cylinder, cool concept. I have heard of using the exhaust but I can't imagine developing much pressure from the exhaust.

Maybe you want to be the guinea pig/trailblazer and show everyone how it's done by cutting into your bed...then we can all know what not to do! Ha. But I would highly consider doing this mod if I knew what I was doing in regards to cutting it and mounting. Maybe it is possible to hook up the compressor to the trailer plug every time. Saves wiring all the way up to the battery and could make it a more portable rig if you wanted to take somewhere with a buddy that did not have one, right?

The ones I had that used the spark plug hole were back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. With engines as sensitive as we have today, I wouldn’t want to do it. Probably start throwing codes and have to get towed to a dealership, lol.

^^^^^ Agreed, very clean. One thing to keep in mind is the heat generated by theses compressors. Joon's was hot enough to burn the crap out of you after a couple of tires.

@16tunterd stated the problem with this pretty well (post 42). Lots of drawbacks to having to leave the door open and to having all that noise in the cabin. Quite a few custom set ups have a permanent mount in the bed with air lines routed to each side of the truck with quick connects. It does look cool under the seat, but I’m sticking to the tool box!

That’s odd. Mine was only warm after doing 6 tires from 20-40psi In a row. Things the 400 runs cooler than the 450? It’s 33% duty cycle compared to the 450’s 100%

I'm definitively interested in the NSV unit, but up to now have been using the newer Kobalt unit.

(edited and replaced video with Lowes link)
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-12-Volt-Car-Air-Inflator/1000092575

Definitely not intended for heavy duty use, but for $45 has served me well the several times I've used it. Both 12 volt and AC with a built in cutoff. Key in the desired pressure, press the start button and it cuts off automatically at the selected PSI.
