Has anyone had issues with the stock head units freezing up and resetting itself? Mine randomly does both of these and it’s getting really annoying. It seems to happen more often when it a Bluetooth device is in operation such as phone calls or playing music through my phone. I initially thought it was my phone, but it has also occurred when my wife’s phone is paired up.
Looking for some asvice, before I take it to a dealer or professional to look at.

    Thanks,
    Randy

Yes, my entune would randomly do this also. Did it a couple times over the last two months until I replaced it.

I thought this thread was going to be about recovering from a really bad hangover. Head unit froze up, need coffee to restart....

    Exzacly!
I’m predicting a head unit freeze, 4 times over the next 4 days....

Did you replace it with an OEM or aftermarket? Mine freezes up multiple times a day. I’m over it.

Right there with you. I'm reluctant to go to the dealer and listen to the we cannot reproduce the issue quote. My gets so bad that the screen stays dark after backing out and placing it in Drive.

Yep, I had that issue with my 2014 Tundra. Whenever driving on a trip that was longer than 20-minutes, the entire system would freeze and I wasn't able to change volume or do anything for about a minute or two then it would do an automatic reboot. (And do the same thing about 20 minutes later) A super big PITA.

At the next oil change, I asked the Toyota tech and they said there was a TSB on the issue and the fix was for them to update the software...took about an hour and I haven't seen it do it since. (The fix was free...hopefully yours is too)

I took in to the dealer today, and was informed that it would cost me $85 for them to do a software update because my warranty does not cover software updates. The wanted to keep my truck for several hours to try and duplicate the problem, but I refused since it has only occurred twice in the last week and a half. I spoke with another Toyota dealership for a second opinion and the guy working there said the same thing, even saying he has the same issue with his Tacoma and it is phone update related. He basically said unless it is always happening, it is a waste of time and money, because the problem may return after my next phone update.

This is a very disappointing and discouraging response from Toyota. I think I would feel some anger if it occurred with my truck.
Can you try a 3rd dealership?

Mine is under 36K, but out of the 3 year? I purchased an extended warranty through Toyota (yes I know, I am that guy, but it has saved me in the past). I need to take it back to the dealership (non-Toyota) that I purchased it from tomorrow for some work that I am having them take care of from the time of purchase. One of the things today is that my extended warranty is not showing up in Toyota system, so I need to get that straightened out ASAP.

I’ve heard mixed thing s about the software update correcting it. I am dealing with the same issue, the frustrating part is it will go months between issues and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it so verifying it’s corrected will be tough.

There is a Software Update that can be applies and the 2014 to 2016 are the same head units. Take a look here at this TSB. Maybe your Dealership will update it for free if you have documented the problem and under warranty if you have a good dealer. It is NOT a hard task. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2016/SB-10084339-5448.pdf

Anyone having this issue on an '18? My truck is 1 month old and it just started doing it today. It's. crewmax limited with the entune premium w/nav. It stopped happening once I turned Bluetooth off on my iPhone 6. It happened again pretty much as soon as I turned Bluetooth back on. Happening when playing music on my iPod and also when on radio. Was happening every couple of minutes.

I had the software update done, using the TSB and some internal connections at the local dealership. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem, it appears to be more common when using bluetooth functions.

Exact same issue, especially when streaming audio via bluetooth then having an incoming call. Happens every other day. Ill be going in for my 5k oil change so I will ask for the software update. I have a 2018 so I hope an update applies to me.

I never have this problem on my 2016. I used Bluetooth with Iphone7. I hope you can get it replaced under warranty.

I don’t know if it is related, but I started having problems with my head unit after iOS 11 came out for the iPhones. I have been to the dealer and had the software update done, and it has not fixed the problem. My album art flashes every time i gain a bar of signal or lose a bar of signal during Bluetooth streaming also.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
You can certainly check if there's an Intune update from Toyota.
I didn't see this mentioned, but one of the main contributors to this, if you're using Bluetooth for talk or music..... is your phone. Make sure your phone's software and music apps are all up to date.

I had the same issues last summer. I have an iPhone. Turn's out there was some updates available for the phone. Made the updates, no problems since.

    'Certainly worth checking into.

I gave my phone a hard reboot last night and the head unit worked for a short trip to the barber shop this morning. After my hair cut, I started a route in the nav and the entune crashed and rebooted. I disabled blutetooth and the head unit stayed on for the next 25 minutes. I enabled Bluetooth and the reboot happened within a minute. I hard-booted the phone again and everything worked for the rest of the 10 minute ride to my workplace. I was able to enter an address in the nav too. Interesting that a hard reboot at least temporarily resolves it.

Some additional info here. So I can stop the issue from happening by hard-booting my phone, but as soon as I turn the truck off and back on again, the reboot issue returns. I found a setting for "auto connect iPhone app" and I turned it off, hoping this was the cause, but it still rebooted. I never downloaded the Entune app, and I've been on iOS 11.2.6 for several weeks. I checked my apps and nothing updated when the issue started occurring (Tuesday during my commute home from work).

I haven't tried removing the phone from the head unit and re-pairing it yet. I'll see if that makes a difference. Probably going to have to bring this up to Toyota, but I',m sure they're going to tell me it's the phone.
