Dealer said my clunking noise coming from ABS actuator

Have some news on the clunking noise heard at first drive around 15 mph. I have a 2014 tundra and just recieved a call from the dearlership telling me that the clunking noise is coming from the ABS actuator. They are going to replace it. As stated by the service rep, even the new models are having this problem. Hope this can help some of you who may have this problem. This is not normal as I have read on some posting.

I just read your post. After the actuator was changed did it fix the clunk noise?

 

Op hasn’t been on in over a year and a half. Interesting though as this is such a common issue everyone assumed it was normal. Maybe someone who has the clunk should take their truck in to confirm. I’ve never heard it on my truck.

 

My trucks been at the dealer many times now and they say it’s the abs actuator but refuse to change it... the noise as never there until around 30k miles. I’ve been looking to see if anyone actually had it changed and the noise went away so I can show Toyota and they can change my abs actuator.

 

I saw that this was normal, but had never heard it. Quite a while ago I remembered to lock my doors and turn the stereo off, sure enuff, heard it. Since it was universally acknowledged here, I assumed it was normal and said YAY I hear it too. Now it's not normal?

 

Mine does it every day since I got it.. didn’t know it was something to Fix.. thought it was just something turning on..

 

Yeah, and when he split, he had zero trophy points! That pretty well sums it up.

My 2008 does it every time I start up and take off the first time. My 2006 Tacoma did the same thing. It's the self-test of the ABS modulator pump, and is normal. Disabling the auto-locking doors makes it more noticeable.

 

Yeah, I’m going to chalk it up as the OP and his service rep being wrong.

Well, most service writers are pretty uninformed.

 

I think that's money, not points. But I wouldn't know for sure, I'm just happy she hasn't left my dumass for the last 40 years.

So a dealership says it’s a problem yet everyone experiences this issue.. either A) it’s a design feature working perfectly (ABS running a system check) or B) it’s in fact a problem. I think the dealership is misinformed.

A good rule of thumb is to never listen to a dealership. They want your money.

Stupid me actually read every post.......I think it destroyed more brain cells then getting drunk for a week straight.

 

My 2017 Tundra makes the same clunk @ 15mph. It is ABS self check. Dealer stated normal and no malfunction. Annoying as ever - might pay myself to replace actuator. Some do it and some do not. Not cool and hard to stomach.

 

My 2015 Tundra with 78,0000 miles does this bump / jolt / lurch from 1st to 2nd gear for usually the first 20-25 min of driving - very annoying. If you have a bunch of stop lights on your way to work, it makes it even worse. Although, this bump does go away after awhile.

After reading many of these threads I've seen people saying it's the "ABS self check" and it's normal. To me, it's a clunky transmission feeling and you have to accelerate really slow or really fast to work past this bump.

 

The abs self test only clunks one time and doesn’t make your truck jolt. What you’re describing is something different.

But that is good to know if the "ABS Self Test/Check" only goes off once. The issue I'm experience is consistent during the first bit of my drive.

I had the same issue. It’s the ABS Sensor. Dealership gave me this paperwork for reference (see attached image)
