What about using a space heater on a non GFCI receptacle, but using an adapter? Am I defying death right now? :goingcrazy:

Three years ago my neighbors house directly across the street caught fire and was a total loss. Her high school freshman son was away at a friends house but left a space heater plugged into a power strip and that was the cause of the fire. His room was a dump and he is a teenage know it all dropout with an attitude. This was not their first house fire either... They say about 11 years ago at another house it caught fire too.
I watched the fire happen live from small to when it blew up into a rage of fire as soon as the firefighters cut a hole in the roof. Smallish house and a lot could have maybe..maybe been saved if they had not caused the fire to explode by cutting the roof open. Never understood why they feed the fire like that on smaller houses.

Surge protectors are a big focus of Safety Programs, recommendation is not to plug anything in them that heats, cools, or has a motor (except a computer with a cooling fan). Also, don't plug other surge protectors into surge protectors.

Wow....I thougot power strips were meant to prevent fires. When they get overloaded they cut the power. Also the breakers in the circuit panel are supposed to cut power When overloaded. So exactly what is the benefit of a power strip other than additional plugs.

The guy in the video says this power strip cut off but you can see the burn marks. Yep that is exactly what they are designed to do.

It's also a good idea to replace old extension cords once in a while. This cord was about 25 years old. I woke up to a loud banging noise and lights flashing in the utility room, both were caused by the arcing that melted the connection. There was a small fire, but fortunately nothing was close by that was easily flammable. Several cords went into the trash after this.

I'm no expert, but I believe surge protectors are designed to prevent power spikes from getting to electrical devices (I.e. Lightning strikes), I don't believe they are designed to limit a constant power flow.

I'm actually in the portable space heater business as I work with a factory in China that produces product for Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, etc. Although typically most space heaters don't cause any problems, it is just a matter of odds until one fails. Using them on an extension cord or power strip is just asking for problems. In my professional opinion, stick with non-oscillating models as the oscillating system increases the chance of a failure. Also stay with the ceramic (PTC) type heater or the oil filled heaters. Neither of these get hot enough to start a fire, although the cords will still catch fire if used with extension cords or power strips. Never leave them on unattended either. Granted insurance my pay for everything if you have a fire, but you can't replace everything with any amount of money.
