    Lots of stuff!
During a trip heading East, we encountered so much driver stupidity. One guy with a jam packed RAV 4 was sitting in the lane doing about 20 under holding up traffic for miles. Then a passing lane appeared. I started to speed up to get by this guy and as we were racing along, I looked down and I was doing 80 mph in a 55 zone and this guy was right beside me! I had to shift into third gear to blow past him. So why would this guy (turd) piss off everyone by doggin it and then refuse to let the frustrated drivers get past when it was safe to do so?

Maybe there is another driving school for these guys (Driving for the visually impaired) or something like that.

If you live long enough, you eventually learn there are a multitude of reasons why people do stupid things. You might even realize you yourself did stupid things in your life. Don’t sweat situations like that. Call him a dick, flip the bird, then move on. It’s not worth the effort to get angry about things like that.

So all the stories I have read seem to all say something similar. They were getting on the freeway or cruising at freeway speeds, but has anyone heard of a motor dying while doing 35mph in a school zone or anything slow speeds lol??

Personally, I'd rather have my engine blow up in a school zone at low speeds where I can safely pull over, rather than cruising on or accelerating onto a freeway.

41K+ miles on my 2022 engine and I got called to take it in for the engine swap. Fingers crossed it comes back running as well as it did with the old engine.

I was wondering how the de-tuned SR trim Tundras were doing as far as engine failures. Since the engines are less stressed, I figured there’s a possibility the failure rate on them is far less.

Don’t the SR Tundras use the smaller turbos like the V35A engines in the GX550?

I agree, just wondering if anyone has heard stories about low speed failures

No. The SR trim is simply detuned. The engine assembly is 100% the same across all Tundra non-Hybrid variants.

The SR trim has failed engines as well. The GX 550 also has failed engines even with it's reduced HP number.

Damn, 70,000 miles on a recall remedy engine, then boom. The miles some people drive you'd be looking at a new truck every 3-4 years. That kind of mileage puts that recall motor at 5 years old already, based on average mileage.

Not specifically low speed, but I recall Ryan Gregg stating there were warning signs, for a while, before his engine blew. IIRC, he noticed a loss of power, more frequent use of the turbos, and a loss of mileage. I'm not sure how long those symptoms existed before his engine grenaded, though.

Less than a week from what he said on Facebook.

MPG decreased from 17-18MPG to 12-13MPG from one fill up to the next.

Increased boost demand to keep truck at speed on the highway when it previously didn't need the same amount of boost.

    Thanks for the specifics.

Have there been reports from others who noticed the same warning signs?

Ryan is in a league of his own when it comes to recalling and noticing these changes.

Pretty sure there are others who would notice a sudden 5 mpg drop in mileage. I know I would.

I'm also usually aware of boost level, as it's become a game for me to try to use the turbos as little as possible.

When one seeks to make one’s self the “official” source for this issue, it would make sense he was hyper aware of his own trucks health.

It's good to exercise the turbos occasionally. If you never get into boost and have the waste gates opening and closing, they can get stuck closed.

I understand. It's virtually impossible to stay out of the turbos all of the time. I was talking about highway cruising. There's usually a certain max speed that will use the turbos less often. I've noticed any speed above 75 mph will use the turbos a bunch, even on relatively flat terrain. Of course, wind, tire size, and payload also have a big impact.

Doesn't make sense without other symptoms, smoking, running hot, making noise, unless he got bad gasoline. Principle of Conservation of Energy. If the mileage went down as a consequence of unusual headwinds/crosswinds then it probably was unrelated to the failure.

Main bearings don't necessarily catastrophically fail all at once. I think it's certainly plausible a failing bearing(s) could increase friction, cause the engine to work harder, and result in lower fuel mileage for a short period of time before causing a total engine seizure.

The Gen 3 engine that the Car Care Nut tore down had a #1 main bearing that was certainly failing, but it was still hanging on. I'm sure that bearing was causing additional strain on that engine.

ROFL. I very much appreciate the laughter at your expense.

    Speechless.

It was June/July in North Texas. That is typically a very still part of the summer for them. Rarely will you see abnormal headwinds/crosswinds unless there are supercell thunderstorms in the area.

Got a call from my dealer in early August for the engine replacement. I’m a July 2022 build. I was #36 on the list. Toyota is only allowing one swap per week. They have to return the old one to get a new one is what I was told. Toyota rep came this week to meet with dealer to see if they can accelerate the schedule. Right now I’m sitting at 30 weeks out from an engine replacement. Truck has 39k miles and I haven’t had any issues with it other than a loose trim piece and an under filled coolant reservoir from the factory.

    Yes.

    I read that to imply.

"And by the way there was a new countermeasure installed in July at TMMLA for the Tundra engine."

There were countermeasure(s) installed before now that don't seem to have worked.

Does that correspond with the release of any new part numbers?
