Yep. Father in law changed the battery for her s few weeks ago and he said the terminals were corroded then. He cleaned and sprayed them. Once they get corroded you never fully get rid of it. I swapped the terminal out with a cheap one from AutoZone but will order an OEM one to replace it.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
I've always had luck cleaning terminals like that with a simple soak in some coca-cola. Once clean and dry or on new ones, I've always liked noco ncp2 spray.

Failed to start this morning. It started after a few tries. I'll verify with her but it didn't click or anything. When she brought it over last night, I started it 8 or 9 times in a row. I replaced the terminal and started it another 5 or 6 times. Seems like it doesn't want to start after it sits for a few hours. The battery may be leaking to cause the corrosion but I dont know if it could also have any other issues that is causing the problem. The starter sounds strong when it is starting.

With the amount of corrosion you had on the terminals, did you end up just replacing the terminal or the entire cable??

There's a good chance you may have a significant amount of corrosion that's not visible in the cable (hidden by the sheath), and if so you'll end up needing to replace the entire cable(s) to get a clean connection...

I just replaced the pos terminal so far. The end of the cable at the crimp didn't show any corrosion but I havent cut into the sheathing downstream on the cable yet to see what it looks like. I could get a new pos cable and run it on the outside of the harness and zip tie it. With that much corrosion after a month it could be leaking and affecting a cell....think we should have the battery load tested and swap it out?

Obviously that's not good but I've seen much worse with no starting or running issues. I would look at my body grounds as well. Also just because your battery is new doesn't mean it's good. Could also pull the ground when she is done for the day and connect in the morning.

Battery could definitely have an issue or two, but it's new so probably not... can't remember if you have a SG hooked up to this vehicle or not, but I'd plug in a reader and check volts when you first power down and after sitting overnight (to see if there's a drop in voltage). Also, make sure you hit those terminals (on the battery) with a good cleaner such as baking soda (someone else mentioned coke), let the cleaner work for a bit, and then make sure all that corrosion is cleaned off the posts with wire brush, etc. while you're checking the cables.

Also, to echo what WV 21 said, I'd definitely check for corrosion and just the connections in generally in grounding stap...

Are you having long starts or the truck not turning over when you hit the switch?

Its the kids 2006 4Runner. It won't turn over at all. Just normal dash lights. No clicking from the solenoid, no rotation. Starter is strong when it does start.

Check the cable connection at the starter and it's possible the solenoid is going bad on the starter

I am going to look at the starter side of the cable this afternoon. Wouldn't the solenoid click though? The starter sounds strong and it will start a dozen times in a row. It seems like the issue happens when the car sits for a few hours.

No issues until yesterday. Im leaning towards the battery due to the corrosion and possibly leaking and affecting one of the cells.

You can turn the switch to the on position and take a screwdriver to jump the terminals on the starter if accessable but the solenoid can be bad without spinning or trying to engage. Intermittent electrical issues are always a pain to run down, but you definitely have one.

if the solenoid is going bad then no it wouldn't click, starters when they go bad (or the solenoids if its separate) are normally intermittent, might work sometimes, might not other times; when it isn't starting, smack the solenoid and starter with a ratchet, don't do enough to dent the thing, but enough to give it a wake up call if that makes sense; then try to start the car

Whats weird is that it only does it after sitting for a while. When she brought it by yesterday, I shut it off and started it about a dozen times without issue.

Sounds like a cell going out in the battery. 'Might have missed it earlier, but have you put a multimeter to battery yet?

might be working when its hot because well, everything is hot from running; weird how they can be like that

when you try to start it and it isn't starting, is the relay clicking? or no click?

Im not sure on the reply. I haven't been near the car when it's having issues. We are thinking that the voltage is dropping as it sits or a bad cell.
