    Guys,

I have a 2002 extra cab 4 door SR5 that I want to replace the OEM radio and adding backup camera, blue tooth, etc. What harness or bypass adapter do I need. The factory amp is bolted just below the radio console cover in the dash, plug adapter harness into amp to it's input connector? Hook up reverse light? A diagram would help too if anyone has one made up already, thanks!

Crutchfield will have everything you need, there's also a stereo thread in the stickies section in the thread for new owners.

Crutchfield is your friend. Put your truck info into the site, order from them, and they’ll send you perimeter step by step instructions for your specific truck and the correct mounting bracket and wiring harness. Don’t order off amazoon. Crutchdield sells the same cheap head units with everything you need to install it right the first time. Plus they warranty everything.

Yes more research revealed the answer! pulled the factory amp out and examined the connector then searched and found the male pin counterpart connector and harness. With the info gained I just have to connect the new radio's harness to the Metra 70-1761 kit, I'm golden now.

Yep, all that info is in that thread I linked

Let us know if you have any other question. That thread also has backup cam wiring instructions, so don't discount it yet.

Thanks though the depth of the links information was more than I needed in my case, good information! when my radio comes in I'll have to hook up the reverse camera that I bought while I'm at it. Funny cars used to have roll up windows nowadays no one would consider buying a car without power windows, locks, AC, blue tooth etc.

You have one of the easy ones! If I were doing an upgrade on anything, the earlier 2000-2003 models with amp in the dash would be my go-to choice. Super easy installs. Why Toyota decided to move the OEM amps to the back of the truck is beyond me.

Probably they moved the amp to the back floor because it's a cooler place then in the sun baked dash

You'd be shocked at how many people we've had come here and wonder why the adapters don't fit the plugs on the back of the radio. The in-dash-amp'd trucks are by far the easiest to overhaul. Be happy you don't have a DC with the JBL system

Wait. So, you bought it open box, the radio didn't come with a harness, so now you've gotta buy a harness? That's messed up.

What, did someone buy the radio from scAmazon or something, take out the harness they lost, and return it?

I'd send that shit back. This is why I only buy from Crutchfield. They inspect all open box items for functionality. Not only that, but if this happened on any product, they'd replace it for free.

What kind of generic ass brand radio is that, anyway?

It's my bad to buy from this guy, should have steered clear when I saw "seller doesn't accept returns" I contacted him through eBay but he hasn't replied me yet on what's going on. Trying to find a bargain to save some money I got scammed it looks like, should have known better the harness is only $15 and is on order.

And it sucks, I had to stop selling. Too many buyer-scammers wanting to feedback-extort sellers, "This is not working, I want full refund or I give you zero stars!" Then they expect a refund and to keep the product.

Honestly, the seller may've had a fighting chance, had they (A) simply put "NO WIRING HARNESS INCLUDED" at the top of the description and (B) not replied like such an asshole, i.e. HAHA, stuck with it! eBay can read all messaging linked to buyer/seller/item. I've had them review conversations with scam buyers while I'm on the phone with them years ago.

Man I have bad memories of that site. Member since 2001!

I can spend $200 I need double din, blue tooth for hands free phone operation, USB input for google maps and a reverse camera input, not adding any amps, maybe a self powered sub. Ordered Infinity Reference REF607FSL 6-1/2" Shallow 2-way Car Speakers for the front doors. I don't know about quality brands today, 20 years ago I liked Alpine but that is just a name/brand these days, who knows who owns that name today...

Alpine is still a top-tier brand. As is Polk and JBL, which are two big holdouts from back in the day. I find Infinity to be a little tinny, but look, budget is budget, and those Infinity speakers will be better than stock in most cases, and better than generic/off-brands from scAmazon. Of course the big names still exist and still put out mostly mid-grade speakers, like Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood. Not a lot has changed in speaker tech, besides the foams and cones.

So, basically something double-DIN with wired carplay/androidauto.

Really, if you want a name brand, it really boils down to whether you're Android or Apple. If you're Android-only, these are your major options. I don't do BOSS stuff, personally. If I had to choose between the two, I'm picking Jensen (which is the same brand/product as Dual brand).

I don't do the no-name stuff on scAmazon. I know a lot of folks with 1st gens on a budget will pick up the ATOTO units on there. I wouldn't trust it per se, because product quality can be hit or miss, but if you need to stick to budget, that may be your way to go.

FYI, if you're an Apple user, BOSS does have another unit with a volume knob that's similar, and at the same price as the Jensen. I installed a similar Jensen, I think the CAR723, in my parent's Jeep recently, and they're really happy with it. It supports wireless CarPlay, backup cam, etc.

    Shifty,

I have the Boss reverse camera already wired, did the cable run last week. I am an iPhone user and so is everyone in my family, usually I get a damaged iPhone and fix it up, at least l myself don't pay $1000+ for a new cell phone! I like apple software, it's intuitive and just works out of the box, my brother is a computer engineer and likes something he can write code for so he is an Android fan but he is on the other side of the country. I'll check out the brand names that you mentioned, thanks for the advice.

If you're willing to go with random ass Android-based semi-generic units off scAmazon, which many on here have done (but I wouldn't do personally), the two big brands people go with are PLZ and ATOTO.

They have units as cheap as $120 with wireless carplay.

    One popular PLZ unit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFL3MFXF/

And one popular ATOTO unit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZKF2L24/

Note they have 4-star ratings, for a reason. Some do arrive DOA, or with non-working audio channels. Rate is low enough they're still above 4-stars. If it doesn't die within the first 3 months you're probably golden. While this maybe sounds bad, that's kinda what you get when you go cheap/off-brand. But budget is budget, and it'll keep you in budget.

    Shifty,

I bought another open box Alpine ILX-W670 for $250. Looked very closely at the pictures, everything is complete and in plastic bags this time. It even comes with a satellite antenna! There should be every feature I would need in this unit.

Good price! Yes, the 670 and 770 come with the satellite antenna. There's a metal shelf you can easily mount it to inside the dash, firing upward.

It's a nice radio, some people complain about the brightness and glare, there are things you can do to combat it. Happy to feed you more info.

If you don't already have a trim kit, see this thread for your options. Since you have a 2003+ truck, you'll need one to install the radio correctly, read the whole thread for tips on install and actual install photos, to pick the look you prefer: https://www.tundras.com/threads/radio-stereo-mounting-kits-for-later-model-gen1-trucks.110711/

Also note, if you don't currently have an OEM radio (I can't remember, too lazy to scroll up), you will also need the OEM metal mounting brackets/ears. I did need to file a little bit of metal on the OEM metal brackets for perfect fitment with an aftermarket radio on my radio, and someone else I know with a Sequoia. You may need to do the same.

When installing the 770 in my 03, the factory brackets all had dimples punched into them that interfered with laying flush against the Alpine head unit. Hammer and a punch knocked them all out and a little tappy tap tap from the opposite side with the punch got the holes smooth and flush. Only other problem was the back of the left bracket blocked the harness on my piggyback amp, easily cut off and a few layers of tape applied to cover that edge.

Post up if you have any other questions regarding the install, I just finished doing it on my 03 AC so it's all still fresh in my mind.
