Hey I got a question for you guys, where is the best place to buy a new motor? My trucks getting up there in miles plus I have a stripped spark plug (PO) didn’t tell me about that one. Anyways I just want to be prepared for if possibly it says no more I kinda want to know how much I’ll be spending.

Not sure about new, maybe the dealership? But I'd look in junkyards and part-out ads on CL and FBM

Ever consider a Time-Sert or Helicoil? I haven’t used them personally, so I can’t really comment on them.

    This.

And I don't know what "up there in miles" is supposed to mean, when we have several members on here with 600k-800k on the original transmission and engine.

Call it what you want, there's a spectrum to everything, extremism lives at the ends of every spectrum, and rarely is it a good thing. Moderation, aiming for the balanced middle ground, that's the winning ticket. Nobody accused anyone during our our soon-to-be 250 years since Independence of being unpatriotic because their horse-drawn wagon wasn't laden with flags of the 13 colonies, and if someone back then, or even 30 years ago for that matter, had shown what a lot of people show these days, they'd have been called a lunatic. Sometimes shit goes too far. If that was designed for a museum, a show truck that gets trailered around, I get it. When that's your DD and you run around blasting it, risking the lives of anyone you hit (if you can see them), that's more like 90% lunatic behavior and 10% patriotic. And the latter number is probably far too high.

I bought the truck with a new cluster unknowingly, Car fax shows in 2019 it was at 350k so Im not exactly sure how many miles on at but in the last two years I have put 30k on it myself.

I mean, the engine may be replaced already too, it sounds like. Someone may've replaced the cluster with the engine, in an effort to get closer to the actual engine miles.

Wow. That’s pretty bad they stripped it a 2nd time. Yeah, maybe the best bet is just a used engine.

Used engine is going to cost no less than $1,500. I'd be really tempted to call around a few machine shops (or engine shops) to see if they're confident with extraction of the existing timesert and install of another, **IF** they deem it's problematic, or if problems occur. It's pretty damn common (at least with Ferds) to timesert repair spark plug holes, this is nothing new. As long as the plug tightens down, it should be fine, Even if it's spinning I wouldn't be concerned as long as the plug can be removed and installed, and you're not getting blow-by into the spark plug tube.

It's not 100% required to drill out an old timesert. There's some reverse-fluted tool for removing them without drilling-out, IIRC.

Pull one from a jy, prolly $250-500, and rebuild it while you wait for yours to die. Be just as labor intensive as swapping a head…probably.

PS - I'm really curious on the PF testing, I'd never heard of EZ-lok before, but those things actually look like a pretty exceptional solution, granted price point isn't great. My only concern with Helicoil or the China knockoff of helicoils is retrieval of the tang from the cylinder and any other fragments after setting.

Just like the 3rd gens, those metal shavings would just boost pressures. Little flakes of aluminum might even help the rings.

In socal junk yards aren’t very common, I’ve looked for totaled trucks but few and far between.

I wouldn’t trust any of the shops in my area to pull it out. They’d probably leave debris in the cylinder and add more misery to an existing problem when they start it up.

You can see I’m not so optimistic. :D

Time and space I don’t have unfortunately, I would love to swap a 5.7 in there but don’t have the time for that either and I live in California so I wouldn’t be able to register it.

Same year or newer is ok. Has to stay a gas engine though.

Just gotta have all the smog equipment working (cats, evap, etc).
