Attention all welders - am I hosed? Driver door

I'm not sure what the mechanism is called that holds a door at half vs full open, but the metal that holds mine in place gave way some time ago. Is there any hope of welding such a thing back in place or am I looking at door replacement if I want it fixed?

 

Very common problem.

You don't weld it, you make two plates and use the existing door tensioner bolts to clamp it in place on either side. Someone was even selling a kit to do this at one point at least, but I just made my own.

The part is called a door check. They get boogered up occasionally - usually in an accident or by the wind flinging the door open. Out of curiosity, do you often open the door to full swing without stopping it by hand?

Watching my kids beat the heck out of those AC rear doors I may need to make a preventive repair there….

 

Don't go "full swing" and consider getting yourself a new door check as well.

On an aside, when I did mine back when - I installed a new OEM lock actuator and was so impressed by the lexus-like door closing action my truck immediately reverted to that the price paid for the parts felt insignificant.

Anyway, @bing5 this is a pretty well known issue, and installing the plates proactively helps avoid it. I think you missed the "proactive" part.
