I'm not sure what the mechanism is called that holds a door at half vs full open, but the metal that holds mine in place gave way some time ago. Is there any hope of welding such a thing back in place or am I looking at door replacement if I want it fixed?DriverDoor.jpg

    Very common problem.

You don't weld it, you make two plates and use the existing door tensioner bolts to clamp it in place on either side. Someone was even selling a kit to do this at one point at least, but I just made my own.

The part is called a door check. They get boogered up occasionally - usually in an accident or by the wind flinging the door open. Out of curiosity, do you often open the door to full swing without stopping it by hand?

Watching my kids beat the heck out of those AC rear doors I may need to make a preventive repair there….

Don't go "full swing" and consider getting yourself a new door check as well.

On an aside, when I did mine back when - I installed a new OEM lock actuator and was so impressed by the lexus-like door closing action my truck immediately reverted to that the price paid for the parts felt insignificant.

A new door check is what broke mine.

Or at least about a month after I put new door checks in, the whole part ripped through.

I did the preventive measure and put the reinforcement plates on mine. Seems like a good investment.

So are you going to order the weld-in version, referenced on the website, since your door check has broken through? I have the same problem, only worse. Took me a while to figure out the prob. Had to join this site to find the two repair options available. Been nursing it but only has gotten worse. Ordered a new OEM door check but obviously is going to take more to repair before installation.

Anyone here try the weld-in plate reinforcement version?

Your check looks different than mine. What did you do to fix yours...besides the spot welds. Where did you get that plate? Toyota used to make a protector that is NLA on the US sites.

I was thinking that I might have to remove my door completely and take it to a welder for repair. Unfortunately, welding is not in my skill set.

Also, I was worried about the door check studs not being long enough when reinforcing with plates because mine barely have enough length for the nuts to cover the threads. Is this going to be an issue for a full repair?

Thanks! Just ordered mine. Seems way easier before they break.

Did nothing but the welding, and the door catch was a spare part in a big bin that came with the truck. Welding is not my best skill even on a mig, let alone fluxcore as evidenced by my picture.
I don't know anything about that plate repair, but if someone else has done it, You can do it! Follow these guys recommendations, and for the rest of the details just wing-it... it's not a space shuttle, You got this :fistbump:

I ordered the non-weld variety. I'll let you know how, or if, it works out
