Time for my 2000 4.7 to get a timing belt replacement.. the quote from a good shop was $2100-2200, "unless, there's a gasket/seal (?) behind the timing belt assembly" "which he wouldn't know until they opened it up", and then it adds another ~$3-400 for PITA work..

He said there's a way to tell ahead based on VIN maybe..? but was too busy to look it up.

Does any of this sound familiar, or legit? Any way to tell ahead so I'm not paying extra?

    Thanks

$2100-2200 is getting into dealership-pricing territory, i.e. pretty gougey.

There is a crank seal (behind the crank), and a pair of cam seals (one behind each cam) which it's a good idea to replace while you're in there, but it's hardly any extra work on the 2000-2004 trucks (it's another story on 2005-2006), so the extra charge seems a little BS-ish to me.

    The most important factors are:
    • The 9yr/90k lifespan of that belt only applies if they're using OEM equipment
    • At that price, they should be using all OEM equipment (the Aisin timing belt change kit with belt, water pump, seals, tensioner, pulleys, etc. is less than $200 for everything but DO NOT buy on scAmazon/fleaBay if you want authentic product!)
    • They should be replacing the water pump, tensioner, pulleys, thermostat (especially at that price!)
    • If your radiator hasn't been done in the last 100k-150k, you should proactively replace it as well, since "pink milkshake" is a thing
    • Make sure, AFTER you get the truck back, that they routed the crank position sensor wire harness properly (and this is serious shit, if you don't know what I mean, check back w/us)
If this isn't a Toyota-specific shop, I wouldn't trust it at that price. We've had dealers on here quote as low as $$1,500-1,700 within the last 3-4 years. My local Toyota/Lexus specialist here in ATL quoted me $2,100 to do baseline service, no cam seals (I'm 2006, so it's far more work), and $2,500 if I want the full monty, i.e. replace every damn thing except the radiator.

    Thank you, Shifty!
Went to another recommended place and it's $1500. He said I could bring the parts if I choose, and specifically said "only Aisin".
Do you have a recommended place to purchase that kit?
And yes, I don't know about how to route the wire harness - maybe there's a youtube video where I could learn?

    Thank you for your help!!

Rock Auto is great as mentioned, I prefer paying 5-10% more buying from Summit Racing to get the added support and fast turnaround, sometimes they give with free shipping and price comes out nearly the same.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy parts on scAmazon, fleaBay, WallyMart, or any of the other vendors, you risk getting non-authentic products (knockoffs), it happens a lot.

Here's the kit you need on Summit: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/asn-tkt-021

If you haven't already caught it, you may want to see this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

And as for the crankshaft position sensor harness, correct routing info here, it should go behind that one bracket, people often screw that up and the harness gets rubbed by a belt (pic), which will cause the truck to run intermittently, or not start at all. (Fuel pump needs input from that sensor to function)

EDIT: Just know, you've got a whole community of awesome people here to help get you through this if needed! Don't hesitate to pop in, ask questions, everyone is generally here to steer you the right way.
