Managed to break 3 lug studs on the highway; but I was blessed two held and I could pull over; limped it to the O’Reillys 5 miles away and left it overnight to swap in a spare hub assembly I hadIMG_4607.jpg IMG_4603.jpg

    Loose wheel broke them?

Honestly I’ve been scratching my head about it; it’s been driving fine, no wheel shimmy to indicate the wheel was loose; but the wheel was indeed loose when I tightened the two remaining lugs

That's usually what will do that. Did you have that wheel removed recently?

Minor face refresh continues...after replacing the bumper valance the next part was headlight restoration. The pics here are the before, then after sanding, first couple of coats of 2K clear coat and then the after pic today (the next morning).

There's some orange peel, but I'm happy enough with it. It was a very humid day and I had to spray them outdoors, so I wasn't looking for or expecting perfection. I could cut and buff but really just wanted the dingy yellow and peeling parts to be fixed, and they are. There's still some internal yellowness but it's worlds better and will do until I upgrade to some nicer lights like Morimotos or something.

    If anyone's interested, I used:
    -Eagle Abrasives job pack sandpaper
    -Spray Max 2K clear coat
-Degreaser I had in the garage, sprayed on before sanding.
-Extra sheets of 320 grit sandpaper I had because the old clearcoat was very stubborn -- of course this made deeper scratches so I had to spend more time smoothing out the surface with the finer grits in the job pack.

If I were to do anything different, I would start by just washing with some dish soap instead of degreaser. It melted parts of the old clearcoat and made them stickier, which made the job harder and clogged the paper more.

    The project grows...

While doing the bumper valance and restoring the headlights I also wanted to put a new grille on due to cracked and missing chrome. Took off the old one but there were quite a few nuts that wouldn't come loose. The bolts on the other side just spun with them as the square heads were no longer securely held in place. Long story short, I had to rip some parts of it off to get to the other sides of those and get them apart.

While finally taking the grille off, I found out the rod for the hood catch lever was rusted to the point that it broke. So now I have that part on the way. Every task leads to at least a few more...

Anyway, here's how she sits now.

Finished up burping the coolant system after the TB coolant bypass. Cleaned the throttle body beforehand and put on an oil catch can after fabbing/painting the bracket it came with. FYI the bracket width in the evil kit fit perfectly bewteen the fan shroud plastic attachment area keeping the side to side movement to zero. The can will hang out until the Whipple gets here...hopefully this week.

    IMG_2144.jpg IMG_2124.jpg I totaled it.

A crazy lady rammed me from a stop sign while I was going 50mph. Still waiting to hear from insurance if they’re going to total it or not.

I think I’m going to replace my 2013 with a 2021. I just can’t get along with the new tundra design or engine.

Do any of you have experience with a 2nd gen Sequoia? It’s down to that vs a 2021 tundra. Both TRD PRO.

No one was injured, but it looks like the Tundra fared better than the rav 4.

Glad yall are ok, the sequoias are just as reliable as the tundras; same power train minus the sequoia having A-trac

I'd go Tundra due to the versatilty of having a bed which you can put a cap on if you want enclosed space. However, if you're between a DC Tundra and a Sequoia, the Sequoia will give you a ton of interior space (similar to the crewmax plus the bed)...

Clearance and suspension will be slightly different between the Tundra and the Sequoia w/advantage to Tundra...

Yeah, I’m hemming and hawing about the seating. I have 4 kids and its tight in my DC tundra. I have to tie the wife to the hood if we go anywhere as a family. (Just kidding, she rides in the bed lol). Joking aside, we have a minivan we take as a family, so its not that big of a deal. But, it’d be nice to have another family hauler. I use my truck for truck stuff pretty often though. I don’t think I go more than 2 weeks without hauling lumber or something. I guess I could put the seats down in the sequoia for that. I kinda wish I liked the looks of the sequoia more.

Best of both worlds... Tundra crewmax!!!

The only thing you'll sacrifice is having that entire back end enclosed, but since you've ran a cap on a truck bed in your previous rig, if that worked and you just want more cab space, everyone will be comfortable in the crewmax...

Can't remember if you mentioned dogs, but w/wife and kids, if you have dogs they'd be able to go in the back of the sequoia and still be in the 'cab' whereas w/the tundra they'd end up in the bed...

I had a 2012 Tundra and swapped it for a 2017 Sequoia. Having the third row as an option so awesome. And I can fit a 4x8’ sheet of plywood in it. Washers and dryers are no problem and even slid a whole garage freezer in it. The rear end is on coils and is an IRS system instead of the solid axle, it’s super beefy. Mine is rated to tow ~7100 lbs.

That’s funny man… that’s exactly what i was just googling. I was actually thinking of taking my 35’s and RW tundra wheels and seeing if they’d fit the sequoia.

While you’re here, is there a separate sequoia forum, or do most folks just use the tundra ones?

It’s this website, there is a separate sequoia section just like the gen 1/2.5/3 sections.

Installed a BRE (MagnaFlow) exhaust system to bring noise back to OEM levels.

Which means I have a SPD cat-back system for sale :D
    upload_2025-7-8_12-10-36.jpg

Why? Because I picked up a new toy hauler and can't deal with the constant noise when towing, especially going up elevations. I never thought I would be the guy to revert back to OEM-ish, but here I am! It's so quiet now. I love it. I can hear the whine of the supercharger again.

I've used this on exterior plastic pieces in the past w/good success, but not sure how it would do on interior pieces...

Glad to hear that nobody was hurt, but that's a total bummer. I'd be flaming hot Cheeto's mad about totaling my '13...

In your search for a new truck, I actually own all three that you mentioned - a '13 tundra, a '21 tundra, and a '15 sequoia. They area all a little different, but I enjoy each one of them.

The 2nd gen sequoia is very familiar to your '13 with a few changes.

    - I LOVE the AWD system offered in that platform; when the snow starts, I just tell my wife to put the vehicle in 4Hi and leave it there til spring. When the roads start to clear or are just patchy, she doesn't have to worry about corning or pulling in to parking spaces in 4Hi. I like it so much I converted my '13 to use a sequoia T-case.

    - The ride is smoother but with the 4 wheel independent suspension it handles a little different. Not bad by any means, but different.

    - Being a more unique platform, aftermarket support isn't super. A lot tundra stuff fits the front suspension, for example, but it's going to be about an inch taller at stock height, and the rear suspension options are very limited. Things like aftermarket stereos also swap over *almost* directly.

    - Amenities are similar, if a little better in the sequoia on like-to-like trims.

    - It's a great tow rig (we tow our 23' TT a few times a year), but I would recommend air bags in the back if you plan on hauling or towing. The factory stance is a little closer to level than the tundra, and with a slightly softer ride combined with an independent rear suspension, air bags simply keep it level with stock rear geometry. I don't know if you've looked at IRS vehicles squatting when they tow - you can see the wheels cambered in. It makes handling a little strange.

    - You can fit 8 people comfortably in the vehicle as long as 3 of them aren't giants. But normal sized people, 7 or 8 comfortable. The middle seats slide forward and back, and even fold forward to flat (not into the floor, just flat). The back seats fold flat in the floor; but there is a small slope to them. You can fold the middle and back row flat and have a flat surface in the cargo area.

    - The roll down back window is awesome.

    - Maneuverability is amazing for such a big rig. Being shorter in wheelbase than all tundras except for the RCSB, it turns on a dime. We usually take it out on dates as it's easier to park even though it's just as wide as the tundra.

    - The lack of transmission cooler from '11 or '12 on up is not awesome. I've seen 240 pan temps. Converter had to be 270. Eww..

I just picked up a '21 at the end of the year, so I'm still getting used to it. It is virtually identical to my '13, but has a few differences.

    - The seating position is horrible in the '14+ compared to 07-13. Get some seat jackers. Seriously. Otherwise, the seats are fine.

    - They removed some interior storage like in the rear door cards. Kinda drives me nuts, but no so much that I don't like the vehicle. I'm just used to having it.

    - You can get a 38 gallon fuel tank. YES!

    - Engine tuning feels dull and boring; Tow/Haul feels more aggressive. It bother some people, but I just drive it like my grandpa truck. But that can easily be changed with a tune from OTT. Or I add some forced induction to it..

    - Overall, the truck feels a bit more refined. I still had to do some work to the suspension to get it ride and handle like I want it to, but I would do that to just about any/every vehicle.

    - I thought the radar cruise and extra safety nannies would drive me nuts. They are just annoying and maybe mildly irritating at times. The radar cruise is MUCH better than the explorer we rented a while back. That was HORRIBLE.

    - I can back up the truck with the door open. The nannies will yell at me, but they don't hit the brakes or disable the gas pedal. I know that sounds silly, but I'm told the 22+ tundras will simply shut you down if you try to do that. I pull a trailer weekly or more, so hitching up I often back most of the way up to the trailer, hop out and unlock the hitch, then hop back in and back up the last 3 feet without bothering to shut my door all the way.

    - My '21 lacks a transmission cooler. Transmission temps hit 235 towing yesterday. Yuck. But that can be remedied without too much issue.

Like I said, they are all very similar, but all have their own differences.

I guess there are now two of us weirdo's running around looking for stock-ish noise levels with supercharged power... Maybe we should start a club.
