I'm gonna swap mine over to 5W-30 and then I'm gonna change the oil fill cap to a 5W-30 so it will be the correct oil technically, cuz that's what the fill cap says. Lol

I've been running Kirkland 5w-30 for the last 30k with 5k changes. On sale it's $3/qt and well reviewed on BITOG. The Mobile 1 5w-30 sheared down to 0w-20 after 5k FYI.

Just imagine what 0w20 becomes after 5k miles. Even worse at 10k.

-5w10. It flows backwards in cold temps.

Yes, I know there are multiple fallacies in that joke.

Oil is not thinner at cooler temps.

    Strong argument for running 5w30.

Yah if I knew what I do now when I bought I would have run 5w-30 from the 500 mile mark.

First oil change in the Tundra surprised me. Really looked like water when I pulled that drain plug.
That was after 500 miles no less. Keep that in for the first 10k? No thanks Toyota

Better question becomes.... does the 0w20 really save on gas vs. 5w30 ?????????????????

I doubt anything significant. I got 21.5 on my last road trip segment, 170 miles, freeway and primary highways. This fill was 5 qts 5w-30 and 2.7 qts 0w-30. Now maybe if I did the same exact trip with the 0w-20 it would get a tenth or 2 better... but, of course, there really is no way to duplicate any given trip, traffic and weather conditions.

Anyone who is running 5w-30, did you notice any difference in the way the engine runs? I'm especially concerned about VVT operation. From what I'm reading doing some research on this, it seems you could lose a little power not just due to thicker oil, but from VVT'S not operating as designed due to different oil pressure.

Has anyone actually been denied of a Toyota warranty claim because you couldn't prove oil changes?

I ran 5w-30 for about 2500. I really didn't notice any difference, and my last oil change was free from the dealer so I'm back to 0w-20. I watched oil pressure and all, didn't seem to make much of a difference on the dummy oil gauge.

Being that 5W30 is spec'd for the Tundra in other countries, then there is no way that running it will hurt the motor in any way. Neither is there any proof that running 0W20 will hurt your motor in any way either. Now if they start recommending 0W8, that may be another discussion.

I wasn't concerned with hurting it, just wondering how it may affect VVT'S. Friend of mine uses 5w30 & said he notices more pressure (on gauge) when hot & he mentioned it seems maybe possible that its slightly lower on power. Hence the VVT question.
