I like the DCs just fine, but the CM has far more utility for me. I haul lots of gear for work that needs to be climate controlled in the cab. Bed is perfect size for our camping gear, all our bikes, an ATV, or a couple of harvested deer. I can fit our whole family of 5 plus a 60lb dog, and everyone has enough space no problem.

I prefer hauling lumber with the rear window all the way down so nothing is hanging out of the bed, but I have put the tailgate down and hauled a load of 12' cedar boards with a red flag on the end for some DIY shutters.

If I had a DC, I would reinforce that giant gap between the front of the bed and the frame. It can be a real problem if you use a bed rack or keep weight in your bed, especially if you venture off pavement often.

Have a Crew Max, was also looking at the Double Cab. Personal preference, but I like two full size doors with symmetrical door handles. I frequently have 3 passengers in the back and they really enjoy the space. I do long road trips (6-8 hours) weekly and I like the ability to have essential items stored in the back seat for easy access, security, and climate control for tools, cooler, cleaning supplies, etc. It keeps the box free for tossing whatever I need in. I haul lumber frequently as well, most times I can get away with resting it on the tailgate and ratcheting it down. However I also own a 5x10 utility trailer if I need more space, which the Tundra tows like butter. I typically put my ATV in the trailer when I haul it because it's much easier to load/unload and tie down. Again it leaves the box open for any other junk I need to haul.

I have seen bed extender hitch attachments, which work great if you want to lay a canoe in the back and have it hang out, or you really want to support a long piece of lumber.

CM gives full-size SUV vibes on the interior while having an adequately sized bed. I more often need the interior room than bed length, plus the roll-down back window gives more room for long items if needed.
This is also coming from the guy who was shopping for a Honda Ridgeline or (dare I say) Hyundai Santa Cruz. I needed a real truck though lol

I like my Crewmax and the smaller bed really isn't an issue. Enough room back there for the things I carry in the bed.
Three grandkids appreciated the extra room when we took the camper last weekend. They are early teens, so not so little anymore. Have been full with passengers a few times for other rides. Bigger adults are completely comfortable. When shopping used I really wasn't searching for one over the other. This truck just filled a few other boxes too.

An extra 1 ft is a big difference for some.

Still kind of looking. Im just debating if we should downsize our camper to get the tongue weight more in line with the tundras specs. Saw a CM in cement color show up on a lot that is a year newer than my current truck, with about the same miles. But the price compared to my truck (2018 F-350) isn't all that close apparently. So Im still looking for the perfect one.

CM vs. DC - I had a 2008 CM that I bought new, and sold it for a new DC in 2021. Waited until the last kid was out of the house for the DC. IMO the CM is like a roomy SUV with a bed. The CM is far more versatile if you have family duties, especially if you have 2+ kids, carpools, sports, aging parents, road-trips, etc. The shorter bed isn’t as handy as the 6.5 footer in the DC, but for us 90% of the time it was fine. We had the CM with the column shifter, so you could squeeze in 6 people in a pinch. That being said, being empty nesters the DC is the way to go, and the back seats can house 2 adults for a couple of hours no problem.

As others have said - I can always drop the tailgate or tow a trailer, I cant add room to the inside. That's why I have a CrewMax. After my daughter was about 6 months old I realized that my access cab wasn't going to work and the extra foot of bed never once made a noticeable difference.

Exactly. I've said it in other threads similar to this one, but if it didnt take @snivilous - level fabrication skills to convert a sequoia (2nd gen) to a 38gal tank, I'd probably own one of them instead of my crewmax.

There was a red one that someone on the forum had a couple of years ago. I want to say it was branded with Nitro Gear Logos and such IIRC. @Cruzer is doing the opposite and doing a double cab short bed, which is going to be sick.

Chevy avalanche! What a pig that thing was! Kinda funny. Watched a doc on a serial killer in Long Island. One of the main reasons he was found is someone id'd a suspects car as a green avalanche. Even commented that there was zero chance he mid identified it. Also there were so few around it shortened the list.

I had about the opposite thinking!

Just finished a 2500mile trip with 2yo and wife in the back seat the entire time. They have more room in the back of the DC than they do in the wife's CX5, or my old Frontier crew cab or 4runner. They had plenty of stuff in the back with them and i had the bed crammed full of a bicycle, Dometic fridge, jogging stroller, luggage and all the other crap. Plus we picked up the dog from the sitter and tossed him in the bed on the last hour of the drive home.

We have plenty of room inside the truck, i like being able to keep all the miscellaneous crap in the bed. That being said, i was really on the fence of getting a DC or CM when i bought my truck. I really would have gotten either, just happened upon a pretty good deal on the DC at the time. No real regrets though.

You can do it, but it will reduce your payload rating to a point where the truck 8' bed is useless...lol.

I was really on the fence about DC vs CM but, with 3 kids in forward facing car seats, CM was definitely the way to go for our 300 mile trips to the mountains. My next truck will be a crew cab standard box unless this one lasts until my kids are out of the house.

I just bought a '19 Crewmax, but I'm definitely reconsidering the decision (as you can tell since I'm on this thread ha). I carry a lot of recovery and work gear with me and I was surprised with how little space there is to store it in the CM. So much space behind the rear seat if only I could access it! Plus I'm realizing a bed camping set up for camping/hunting is better suited to my needs instead of a trailer or roof-tent.

Anyways... this is the first I'm seeing about reinforcing the bed/frame gap. How much of an issue is that with these trucks? I don't purposely seek out crazy wheeling (a la Moab or the Rubicon trail), but find myself up all sorts of two track between Nevada and California.

I needed the room for the back seat and less truck bed space. I drove both, liked the Crewmax more.

    Worth reading this thread:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/cracked-pinch-welds-under-bed.107934/
It takes less to become an issue than you’d think. These are heavy, flexible trucks, and that first foot of unsupported DC bed can move enough to mess up those welds, especially if you do mild off-roading with a bed rack.

Only solution is to hack the frame and convert to a DCSB.
