Well... Doerak is no longer with us :(

We were fortunate enough to find a local vet to come out to our home to help him through this process. This is the first time we've been able to do this since moving here for our retirement, and I've forgotten how much more peaceful it is (or at least it feels that way from my perspective). Here's one of our final photos from yesterday morning hanging out with him about an hour before his passing... RIP!!!!

(followed by some moments throughout his life for @455h0le_dachshund and a few others that have asked for more photos)...

    DoerakFinalPhoto.jpg

This was about 2 years ago...

    Doerak2yearsago.jpg

About 4 years ago... not fighting weight, but solid, healthy and still strong AF :muscleflexing:

    Doerak4yearsago.jpg

About 6 years when we first retired... A little beach time and a little leaner pup!!!!

    Doerak5years ago beach.jpg

    another beach photo...

Moving to the coast... He was surprising calm during much of this drive in the Uhaul

Sorry to hear about your loss, man.
But I think you're onto something about the peaceful way of going at home.
It was the worst day of my life waiting at the vet for two or three hours and I know Benni was stressed. We all were.

Sorry for your lost. It’s always hard to let go. I know, because we lost ours a couple months ago. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear, but so awesome you were able to do it at home where. You gave him the best life he could have and he gave you memories that will last forever.

This girl was awesome. We were referred to her by some friends, and it was our first time meeting her. She was patient, not rushed about anything, spent about an hour hanging out with Doerak and us just chatting, for an extremely sucky day, that part of it was perfect...

I've felt that way at the vet in these situations before... FTS!!! It makes the entire process feel off and wrong for the dog :(

We transported him to be cremated and will hopefully have him back later this afternoon!!!

Sorry for your loss, he was a good looking dog, looked like he loved doing what he did to.

Doing it at home is the way to go imo. When we lost our first one 4 years ago we knew going to the vet would suck because she hated going, didn't want that to be her last memory/experience. Was recommended Lap of Love by someone we knew, we had a very similar experience as you described and 100% will go that route in the future.

Well... it's a week later, and it was time to say good bye to another close friend :(

At the beginning of the month we knew both pups were on their way out... 7524

We thought Doerak was going to be with us longer than Hook, but his quality of life took a much quicker turn than Hooks. However, this morning, time caught up with Hook, and we were forced to say goodbye to him as well...

As promised for @455h0le_dachshund and a few others, here are some photos of Hook through various stages of his life and time with us. Hook spent A LOT of time in the '08 Tundra. He was a big boy and enjoyed the roominess of the crewmax (the entire rear seat area was platformed for him and the other dogs), but most of all he loved the moonroof. He was tall enough to stand with his front paws on the center console and his entire head out the moonroof. He loved it on the coast, as he got much more moonroof time here with the temps being much cooler; plus with the slower pace, we could just cruise along the coast w/his head out the roof and all the ocean smells right at the tip of his nose.

Crap this has been a shitty week :pout:

But it was nice to be retired and have limitless time to spend with these guys at the end...

Last thing I'll say is, 'thank you' to those that passed along the kind words and messages upon Doerak's passing... including some very thoughtful and sincerely heartfelt PMs from several of you!!! It really means a lot to my wife and I

These first 4 photos are from puppy to picking him up at the airport...

    HookPuppy1.jpg HookPuppy2.jpg HookPuppy3.jpg HookPuppy4.jpg

    Worn out pre-adult sofa time:
    HookYoungSoftKong.jpg

Working his way into adulthood and starting to fill out:

    HookMaturing.jpg

Hook wasn't happy in anything but a Tundra:

    HookFrustratedwHonda.jpg

Moonroof Car Rides were his favorite jam!!!!

    HookSunroofTundra.jpg

Cold raining day on the coast, so he was forced to use the back window:

    HookTundraCoast.jpg

Found this photo buried in the archives of us getting ready to go out the rear slider for a break and apparently this cat had no idea what was about to happen

All I can say is I am really sorry man; this absolutely sucks. But I am glad you got to spend the time with them both at the end. You gave them an incredible life and they loved you unconditionally. They are Man's Best Friend for a reason......i am so so sorry

Sorry you lost another pup so close to Doerak. Did y'all use the same vet for Hook? Baby Hook had the cutest little ears! He looked like a bear cub.
How many pups you down to now?
    Any plans to adopt more?

We tried but she was out of town and wasn't going to be back until Friday... We had spoke w/her on Sunday and was tenantively planning Friday morning depending on how things went, but he ended up going down hill pretty quick and we didn't want to wait until he stopped eating and drinking, etc.. so we used an emergency clinic during the night.

He did look a lot like a miniature black bear!!

We are now down to Buddy, the wife's pup, and the spaniel...

No plans of any more adoptions for now. Three is a good number for us and will still keep us busy. The spaniel will be 12 this year, and the wife's pup is getting up there as well, but they are healthy for now, and Buddy is still under 2... I'm sure in the future we will adopt again, but for now we'll focus on enjoying our pack as it is

This was our last dog. He was my wife's baby, when he passed she said she couldn't handle going through that again.

I've been told by a few people that it's easier to cope with the loss if you have multiple dogs. I've never had more than one at a time. But when I'm ready, I'd like to adopt a small pack. I'm thinking a Jack Russell Terrier, a Rat Terrier, a Beagle, and a Chihuahua.
