Yeah, George is a good boy, all right. But George hates birds. He'll sit at the bottom of a power pole for hours and bark at a buzzard sitting atop. And George killed every chicken and duck that my neighbor had.

But still, he's a good ol' boy. Comes over to the fence to greet me every morning.

 

Penton, last 2 Parson Russell Terriers have been named after motorcycles.

 

That is Rylee. She hates big dogs and likes to jump on things to be the tallest.

Legend has it she once paw slapped a German Shep .

We took Poppy to the ball fields last night to see some of our son’s friends play. She made lots of friends.

And the trained killers that I don't even know the names of?

 

Unforunately, not a great time in our house (dog wise)...

We knew this time was coming. I had (3) within a year and a half of each other; all large dogs, and all w/working backgrounds...

Rudy (Malinois) passed last year (his birthday would have been yesterday);

Hook (Dutch Shepherd) is playing out his last few days;

and Doerak (Malinois) is on his last few weeks to maybe a month or two...

I worked Rudy professionally. Purchased him at 10 months old, worked him up to his retirement, and he was just under 14 when he passed...

Hook is a personal dog we've owned since he was a young pup. He's a large boy and age is just getting the best of him (just turned 12)...

Doerak was worked professionally by another handler. However, he was unable to remain w/his handler in retirement. He's a 'handful' and just not suited for most home environments. Plus, he needed to be with someone that could still give him consistent, progressive and challenging work (even if it was in a training environment). He needs to be challenged daily and given an opportunity to use his nose, brain and his body to problem solve and satisfy his drive. I've done my best at keeping him active and healthy, but eventually time catches up to us all... (he's 13 now)...

Once Doerak passes, that will be the end of my working dog 'legacy' (that's really an overstatement but wasn't sure what else was fitting). He was the last SWAT dog that I tested, selected and trained for professional service that is still alive...

I do have one more detection dog that's still around. She's a black springer/cocker mix (her name's Daisy) that's no longer in service, but living in retirement w/her handler...

Buddy is doing really good, except I think he's a little confused about the dynamic of what's happening with the other 2 right now...

I really hate navigating this time in their lives (Hook and Doerak). Timing will never be perfect and knowing 'when' to say goodbye is never easy or completely obvious. So, for now, we try to find balance between quality of life (good days, enjoying food, looking forward to activity, etc.), dignity, pain, and everything else that plays into that decision.

Ok, I'm done for now...

 

My goodness Joe that's a tough run on the timing with everything. I knew you were still freshly scared with Rudy's loss and I'm really sorry to hear this about Hook and Doerak. I wish upon you all the strength and support you need to be able to manage all the feelings you're going through right now.

 

This will have to do for now... I needed a snack this morning, so took Buddy w/me to grab a breakfast sandwich and a TripleConPanna

Sounds like you work just as hard as they do to make sure they’re happy. Stay strong buddy, take comfort in the fact that you’re doing everything you can for them.

Is Doerak the German equivalent to Derek?

 

I didn't name him. But, he came from the Netherlands (Holland), so I'm guessing it's Dutch...

Dutch to English translation and meaning. doerak. rascal, villain, scoundrel, rogue; mischievous person or animal.

Edit: Apparently, as is w/anything on the internet, there's some differences of opinion on origin. Some say the word is actually Russian, but most argue its origin is by way of Indonesia.

 

I just looked it up as well and thought what an aptly named police dog. Causing chaos for criminals everywhere.
