    5/8” socket / wrench
    3/4” socket / wrench
    Drill
    13/64” drill bit
    3/8” drill bit
    Center punch
    File
    Flathead Screwdriver
    Spray Paint

Of course you have to do the install in the shirt that you get with the order.

    Packaging was great

Here are all of the parts and tools laid out.

    Installation Instructions:
    1. Start by removing the driver’s side taillight using a T30 torx bit to remove the two bolts on the taillight. Pull the taillight outward to release the two tabs. Then twist the plugs with bulbs to remove from the taillight housings. Set the taillight housings aside.

    2. Use the flathead screwdriver to detach the wire mount for the taillights inside of the opening. Push the lights off to the side.

    3. Line up and place the provided DRILL TEMPLATE to the sheet metal that is on the back side of the taillight opening. Use the center punch to make a dimple in the sheet metal where the holes are shown in the DRILL TEMPLATE. Drill two 3/8” holes. It is much easier to start with a smaller hole and then move up to the 3/8” drill bit. Use the file to clean up the burrs on each side of the holes. Use a matching color spray paint to cover up the raw metal in the holes. This is an area that is not typically visible so you don’t need to be too careful when painting.

    4. Place the LOWER PIVOT BRACKET on the back side of the sheet metal (looking from wheel well to back of truck) and mount using the two provided 3/8” bolts and washers.

    5. Slide the MAIN UPRIGHT through the top of the tail light opening. Loosely bolt the upper bolt through the upright, the factory sheet metal, and into the UPPER BOLT PUCK using the 7/16” bolt and washer. Be careful not to drop the UPPER BOLT PUCK while installing. It is difficult to recover if dropped.

    6. Thread LOWER PIVOT BRACKET and the MAIN UPRIGHT together with the ½” bolt and washer. Then go back and retighten the upper bolt of the MAIN UPRIGHT.

    7. Remove the factory lower bedside supports with a 10mm socket. Install the new FENDER SUPPORT REPLACEMENT piece with the curved section sweeping toward the back of the truck using the provided ¼” hardware.

Here is a comparison of the stock fender supports (top) and SDHQ supports (bottom)

    8. Install the LOWER MOUNTS to the factory receiver hitch using factory bolts.

    9. Install the CONNECTING ROD with the 3/8” x 1 ¼” bolt, flat washers, and lock nut on the RIGHT HAND CLEVIS side going to the MAIN UPRIGHT. Install the LEFT HAND HEIM side to the Lower Bracket using the ½” x 1 ½” bolt and flat washer. Adjust as necessary and tighten all hardware and jam nuts.

    10. Plug your taillights back in and reinstall your taillights using factory hardware.

    11. Repeat the above steps for the passenger side.

This is an great solid and totally hidden system that definitely increases the strength and rigidity of the back end.

Thanks Brian. The fact that these are hidden makes it a really attractive upgrade. I didn't know these existed.

Maybe its too early in the morning for me but can someone explain to me what issue this product is addressing? Weak bedsides? Seriously, is that a thing?

Apparently there's no issue it all if no one answered your question in 3 years! LOL

Are bedside supports necessary if I put a camper on the truck. An AT Overland Summit, similar to the Go Fast Campers

Airguunner hasn't been on in over a year so doubt he cares anymore. The beside supports are not really necessary if you never go over road. If you do go offroad and you have any kind of weight pressing down on your besides then something like this is recommended. There are other products as well. But this one is hidden.

I put these on my 21, because I put a topper on. Not sure if actually necessary, but cheap insurance. Much nicer product than what I was expecting. A lot more expensive than the ones that go in the bed, but you couldn't pay me to put that style in.

Not saying these are needed or that anyone should buy them, but if someone wants bed supports, I definitely recommend the SDHQ ones.

I do like the fact that they are hidden. I also don't like the look of the ones that mount in the bed of the truck.

I’ve not seen this thread before, or the product. The link Brian shared way back when didn’t take me to the hidden system site it just took me to SDHQ’s main site. I poked around on there but didn’t find them. These stiffeners look great, though. If I notice any separation between my bed sides and tailgate I think I’ll DIY something similar. So far though, eight months after installing my cap and making some more traditional stiffeners, I haven’t seen any movement there.

In my opinion if you are adding a cap, camper, or rack that will have weight applied to the bedsides it is a very good idea to add bedside supports. The hidden ones are great as they dont take up any space in the bed and allow you to add items like the side storage cases.

This is definitely something I'm going to do. Install looks harder than I expected, but totally doable.

Is there any benefit in coordinating this with the retractable bed step install?

    Too many, but not enough....
How does this item compare with the in bed stiffener upgrade? Is it basically the same thing but accomplished in a different way? If you have one, do you need the other?

Yeah this is also a bed stiffener - just hidden.
