Figured out why my parking brake wasn't working..

That’s what happens when you don’t use it.

 

I was a big fan of the powder that floated out when I pulled the boot off. Some combination of mold, salt and rust.

 

The Dorman aftermarket replacements are an acceptable solution.

It's aluminum, but not sure cast would have been much better in our region/salted roads. I did this when installing the new Dorman set. Pumped it full of grease.


One of them actually broke in half when I tried to free it up. Had not moved for years

I see you have an 02, so this set is for 2000-2002.

 

Thats clever. I installed the Dorman set from O'Reilly's and greased tf out of it. That and new cables front and rear from RA, and I actually have a brake again! Not terribly difficult to do, couple a pita areas.

 

Ha - in our area, it doesn't seem to matter. It's part of my yearly maintenance to fill them with grease now - same with the spare tire winch.

 

You guys grease those things?

 

I actually take mine apart, sand the rust off the pin and grease the whole assembly every few years when they stick.

 

I guess I'm fortunate to not have ever had mine stick. Learned something new.

 

'DFW' - I'm guessing your bed also isn't full of rust holes. All the salt here helps keep our truck light weight. "speed holes"

No, actually that’s 10 years of neglect and not doing an undercarriage wash. Mine is nowhere near as bad in the 23 years I’ve been driving mine.

 

Turn adjuster screw from backplate with rear wheels jacked up until you can feel the resistance when spinning by hand.
