I know this is an old thread, but I was just wondering what the outcome was of replacing the side glass with capstone on your tundra

I have had my truck into the dealership 4 times to get the wind noise to stop they got it to quiet down a little bit but now I am going to change out the side windows with the capstone laminated glass. Hopefully this helps because the truck is still has a little to much wind/road noise for me. I love the truck but for the money it should be quieter.

Agree 100%. Be sure to report back on the Capstone glass if you do it... if you don't have a decibel meter app on your phone, it would be interesting to see (hear?) the difference.

Would you be able to use a sound meter to report back on the difference in decibel levels? Screenshot of the app I use...

My ‘16 Tacoma TRD OR had an acoustic windshield. Somewhere I saw that my ‘23 Lim TRD OR also has one. I took a lug nut into the lower corner on the fwy and my glass repair guy said it was acoustic glass and showed me there were spider cracks in 3 layers of glass. He could only get the crack repair glue injected into the top two layers so I still see spider legs in a layer 3 levels deep. Not sure how many layers there are total.

Dealer SHOULD use your VIN number, that will ensure you get exactly what came one the truck as far as windshield or anything else you replace. Mine was replaced at 2200 mi thanks to a fenderless Jeep with big lug tires.

I research the numbers for the passenger and driver side window glass from a capstone and ordered that glass and installed it and the vehicle is much quieter due to it being laminated glass. The standard glass on the 2024 limited TRD off-road is not laminated. Only the front windshield is.

Didn't measure the sound levels before and after? You say it's quieter to your ears, ok... but taking that simple step would have provided actual proof positive.

ADDED: What part numbers did you use for the Capstone (acoustic) side glass?

From a guy that works for a company that makes laminated side windows for cars, the laminated will absolutely be quieter, if it’s constructed for sound reduction. Now is it worth the price? Maybe…

The plastic layers in between the glass is critical. In order to get the sound reduction there needs to be an acoustic PVB inner layer. The capstone trims have this. But not all laminated windshields, side windows or roofs have this PVB layer.

I would stay away from aftermarket. The real benefit to laminated glass panels is strength. Acoustic properties come from that inner plastic ply

FYI, if your insurance includes windshield coverage, make sure you have a "OEM binder". Otherwise, they likely won't pay for a OEM replacement.

I just went thru this with Farmers on my wife's 4Runnner. We didn't have the binder, so they refused to pay for a OEM windshield . The company that did the replacement assured us we got a "premium aftermarket" replacement, whatever that means.

It might be worth a call to your insurance agent before its time to replace your windshield.
