Tires with 3 ply sidewalls

A recent hunting trip was significantly altered when I blew a sidewall on a Toyo ATIII. I’m not 100% positive a 3 ply sidewall would’ve made the difference, but nearly all of my recent flats have been sidewall related. I think it’ll be a must have for my next set of tires.



What are your go to 3 ply models? Looking at Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, Duratrac RT, Wildpeak AT and RT, Toyo RT trail.

 

They aren’t explicitly out.

It seems when I buy lighter tires I have sidewall issues. The fuel economy was quickly eclipsed with the replacement cost.

 

Had Cooper AT3s go flat a few days ago on the freeway in my FJ and destroyed themselves before I could pull over in a safe spot. I have Load D Duratracs on my Tundra and had standard Load on my FJ more for MPG, but like you am now reconsidering this. Maybe paying the Load C/E tax in mpg makes sense.

 

You could also check out Kenda Klever R/T. They have what they call a “Triple Threat Sidewall”. They also have a lot of lugs on the side which should give some protection. I don’t put mine to the test offroad though, so honestly can’t speak to their durability too much. They have good tread wear and traction though.

 

Cooper uses Armor-Tek3 on several of their tires. I had a set of Cooper S/T Maxx's with Armor-Tek3 on my 07 Tunny. Quite decent.

 

I really like Duratracs, but I’ve had two of them ruined from sidewall puncture/laceration (not the new RT model). I’ve also ruined a Cooper AT3, and most recently this Toyo.

I’m over 10-15 lbs in weight.

 

What are snow manners like?

 

Do you like them in winter conditions? A buddy of mine has a set of these, I didn’t realize they were three ply sidewall.

I see you had the ATs and these are the more aggressive RTs. Reading that thread I saw your decibel meter on the highway. Ironically my cab read 72.5db at 73mph using the RTs 5k miles on them vs your 76-83 on lower mileage ATs at 60mph. I also have some rowdy exhaust. Differences in phone/app used I guess could be a factor too.

 

I have been happy with the AT2s. A few times I was sure I had damage and nothing.

 

In the snow, man, as long as you have weight in your bed, the ST MAXX are bomb proof and offer steroidal traction! I love mine and yes, they are heavier than your standard load tire but it's sure nice knowing you'll make it to wherever you're headed. I've had mine in the northern belt of the US and they've been terrific on road trips, driving through the snow, mud, and rocks. I have them on all of mine and my family member's vehicles as they are the best tire I've rocked. They're considered a commercial all terrain.

 

They're definitely needed in AK! That's where I discovered the use-case! Rocks love kissing sidewalls, these things throw them off and keep moving. Great for towing, too!

 

If I had a dedicated fun car just for kicks I may want a quiet truck too. For now it has to scratch all the itches for me, so loud it is as far as exhaust! Tires I do not care to hear regardless. These RTs are a little louder than the Toyo ATs and Falken ATs that I have had before, although people say Falkens get loud with miles but never had mine long enough to find out. That said they aren’t loud enough to bother me like an MT tire, and it’s worth the tradeoff to me personally for the super agressive appearance just from a looks standpoint. They’re also surely better in offroad performance than any AT. Otherwise I’d have swapped them for Toyo ATs again by now. These RTs are also not that heavy despite being E rated and 3 ply sidewall, 63 lbs each confirmed with a refrigerant scale in 285/75r18 (35x11.50).

 

I also had a set of Discoverer STT Pro MT's with Armor-Tek3. Nice tires. Very heavy. Decent on deep snow.

 

So true. I really liked the DuraTracs that I had on my 09 Taco. Performed great in most road conditions while driving up to AK and while there. Downside....sidewalls are thin and tread wore quickly with the softer rubber compound.

I’d suggest the Nokian Outposts but I think they are a 2 ply sidewall as well. The LT sizes have Kevlar in the tread cap and sidewalls; P rated only have it in the tread cap.

Of the ones you mentioned, I’d be inclined towards the Mickeys - they have a lot of rubber in a lot of places and are heavy but robust. Else, the Cooper ST maxx and ST Pro have some heavy duty sidewall tech. It’s older tech but that doesn’t mean inferior. They strike a good balance between weight and robustness as they typically only weigh a few pounds heavier than say the Cooper AT3 (or I guess now Stronghold AT) equivalent.

Any idea what wheels are on that tundra?

 

These are FN BFDs 18x9 in Graphite Gunmetallic. The center caps are my own creation though since I didn’t like the ones they come with.

A buddy of mine has BFG KO3s and recently lost a sidewall. He’s not super impressed with them.

Hoping to hold off till Black Friday, and will likely grab a set of ST Maxx.
